Hey y'all, I have general knowledge when it comes to suspension but I have been stuck trying to find the right one for my tacoma. I have a budget of about 2,000 for my front coil overs and I want something that is capable offroad but somewhat comfortable as a daily driver. I need something that provides 3-4 in of lift for the front. Ive been looking at a bunch of threads and most people recommend either some budget suspension or kings/foxs which can run almost $2500. Preferably won't have to spend that much but I was hoping anyone knows any solid coilovers that are in between the two that aren't pieces of shit but won't be overkill.

i'm actually in a very similar position. stock TRD sport suspension(whatever it is) looking to upgrade to offroad capable while not completely prioritizing it.

Moderate off-road needs 3 to 4 inches? No no no. If I could do a blue section of the Rubicon in a DCLB with stock suspension and 32s, you do not need what you think you need. Learn how to air down and pick a line.

what about a 2 or 3 inch lift just for some added clearance?

I have it at 2.5 inch of lift right now, about to add a bumper and it already sags without it

figure it will sag about a half inch with 650lb springs so 3-4 inch turns into 3.5-3ish

go drive it first. A larger tire diameter will give you more clearance. Don't throw money at a problem that doesn't exist yet.

Need to upgrade suspension before I put the bumper on, the coil over springs I'm running are only 500 so not sure I can say fuck it and toss the bumper on to see how it drives

What wheels do you have? what tires do you have? What is your offset? Will it require UCAs for tire clearance and caster?

Would think I could theoretically just swap the springs out with my current suspension then deal with it from there, it would just be inconvenient since I plan on getting new suspension anyways by the end of the summer

Running Toyo AT/III 34x10.50R17LT at 33.5in diameter and 10.6in width, have them on trd pro wheels that came with the truck pretty sure they are +25mm offset, already have aftermarket UCA's for the lift kit I'm already running

I say Bilstein 6110 with new springs in the front. The shock has a lifetime warranty and does not need to be rebuilt like the kings & fox high-end units. I have them on my almost stockish 2015

Assuming they handle fine offroad and are fairly comfortable on the road?

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
^^ Yup! @Crikeymike is the guy to talk to. Great shocks! With just a bumper, you could go with the standard spring, in my opinion. If you're going to add a winch, you'll want heavier. Remote reservoirs look nice and trick, but again in my opinion, are completely unnecessary for many people...it's your money, though.

I have IMS with the heavier springs because of my skids/bumper/winch and couldn't be happier with their performance, both offroad and as a daily driver. 2 1/2" of lift with 33s easily give me enough clearance for situations like this:

    Damn, that was fun!

Before you buy anything check out Overland Outfitters videos https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandOutfitters

Their first video on this was for high end shocks and was fantastic. This one went campy on the video style but still has great info on the shock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s271Ln-6QI

WATCH THIS FIRST. (hint, dobinsons did not do well...)

I am a huge fan of Bilstein. They may not be best for big air, but for road use they tighten the suspension and significantly improve road feel, while also reducing harshness (firmness and harshness are NOT the same).

I saw those videos. Entertaining, but not a very real-world comparison. I've had Bilstein and will stay with my Dobinsons. YMMV.

Not saying one has to agree with the results but how is that not a very real-world comparison?
