SUP / Paddleboard transporting?

    Has anyone used roof rack on a 3rd gen double cab to haul SUPs? Not sure there is enough room on the roof. I would like to use the soft racks, similar to the picture BTW...my boards lengths are 10'6"
    Anyone?

    In Hawaii there are a lot of Tacomas and boards of all kinds. Most that I've seen use a metal rack mounted in the bed and a little higher than the top of the cab.

    I think your board may hit the sharks fin antenna if you aren’t using a rack with crossbars to elevate it.

    I strap down my SUP in a padded SUP bag in the bed, tailgate down, with flag waggling off the back — if it’s a short trip; or up top on my OEM rack crossbars strapped down to those velcro surfboard pads (Vesl, Dakine, etc.) — if it’s a long trip and I need the bed for gear.

    I’d imagine that if a roof rack provided enough clearance above the shark fin antenna, you’d be good to go. Here’s a photo of what I use.

    With a 10'6" and 3' of contact with the racks you will be ok driving 25 mph.
    Otherwise the nose of yer boards will be wanting to lift off.

    Thanks for the replies. I think I will look for a used bed rack and go from there.
    BTW...fins forward when carrying sups or surfboards. That way if the boards try to get airborn, the fin will help stop them or slow them down til you can pull over.

    It’s the Yakima OverHaul Hd rack. With Yakima’s SUPDawg paddle board rack mounted to it.

    Use a tie down rope and secure to something it the front. That what used to do with windsurfer and looks like JK did similar in post #4.

    We always strapped boards down like this pic. Fins up and at the front of the vehicle; nose pointing back. That eliminates the lifting forces and also lets the fins provide backup in case your straps come loose.

    That is how we always used to do it.
    I used to race downwind SUP with 14' and 17 ' boards stacked.
    When I posted, I didn't stop to think about the orientation of the boards on the rack.

    Downwind Sup here on Maui has evolved, and now everyone is riding foilboards .

    I lived on the west side for a couple years next to "S turns" park. I had a couple Naish nalu boards for fun. Always wanted to do a downwinder on one of those 17' SICs.
    I moved to North Shore Oahu after that, between Waimea and Pipe. I loved my time in Hawaii and miss it every day.
