So I am changing the drums brakes on my 95 tacoma 4x4, the first side went all right and is done. But now I can't seem to get the drum off the other side. I have backed the adjuster all the way in, and the e brake is off so the drum spins freely. I used the bolt holes to thread in bolts however they both stripped out and cracked the drum slightly near the hole. I have also tried just wacking the crap out of it with a huge hammer and no luck.

I am thinking about trying to re tap the screw holes and put a different bolt in. I think my issue is that the center part of the drum is rusted to the hub or there is a lip of rust there the drum does not want to slide over.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hose it down with a penetrating oil of your choice, wait for a bit then do it again. If the drum is cracked you maybe be better off replacing it once you do get it off.

^ spray it every 30 minutes and give it a few hours before trying to pull it.

I also take a brillo/sandpaper/wire wheel to the hub part before removing the drums to eliminate any extra hindrance.

you may also have a groove worn into the inside of the drum from the shoes that is still getting stuck. even backing off the adjuster all the way does not completely eliminate a badly grooved drum.

but if you've already stripped the bolt pull holes and cracked it just replace the drum or both if they are worn

edit: spray the lug studs as well, could be stuck on those

Yeah I am planning on replacing the drum. I already cleaned up the hub with sandpaper. I will try hitting and waiting. I did let it sit overnight.

    I got it off!

Ended up cleaning up the hub a bit more with a dremel with sandpaper on it and then beating the crap out of it.

I will definitely be anti-seizing the hub.

One final question, when I put the new drum on I should adjust the adjuster out so there is a slight bit of drag on the drum, am I correct ?

Yes,adjust until a slight drag is felt then back off a couple clicks. ETA you may want to hit the pedal a couple times with the drums on to "center the shoe's" and then readjust ;)

when you say you backed the adjuster, do you mean the star wheel that is accessible through the backing plate? If so, did you try to whack it with a hammer after doing this? Maybe it just needs a little help after you made the adjustment. Do you live in the rust belt?
