A few months ago I brought my 2011 Tacoma into a local off road suspension shop to have them install a pairs of 6112’s and an icon aal kit. Everything seemed to go well until I noticed a gap on my strut shaft above the mounting place. It rattled and made noise but I was so busy that I put tape on it to keep it from making noise and forgot about it. Today I took the truck on some Forest service roads and noticed so many noise from the shocks. I decided to do a little bit of digging in the forums to see if anyone else has had this issue, and I found very little about it. I looked at it tonight and noticed the driver side isn’t lined up evenly and it seems as the shop missed a step when installing the stock top hats. If anyone knows what needs to be fixed or how I can take action to fix this please let me know. I thought I went to a very trustworthy shop but In hindsight, I wish I did not put this off because it’s been roughly 6 months since I had it at the shop and I don’t think that they will help me with no charge, despite possibly being their fault.

Yeah, something wasn't assembled right. They probably missed the washer under the strut cap, and probably also didn't tighten it down properly. That nut should have been all the way down until the threads ended

    Here's a video explaining it:

Best picture of my 6112’s. Try tightening the top nut. If that doesn’t help something isn’t installed correctly. My bushings were compressed.

It’s hard to tell from the photo because of the tape but there are no more threads to tighten the bolt.

Then they've rubbed off against the washer. Watch the video I sent, you'll see there should be a lot of threads there

They definitely have not rubbed off, from the videos I’ve watched of people putting together the 6112s it seems like they missed the washer and bushing below the top hat. I’m taking it into the shop tomorrow to get it figured out. They claim to have a lifetime guarantee on service

    Here’s a update

The shop didn’t put in the washer and bushing below the top hat. They took care of it the next day at no cost and even ordered new 6112’s in case mine had damage.

    Common error, even among "professionals"

Glad they got it fixed up!!

when you say your bushings were compressed, what did that entail? control arm bushings or the upper shock/strut mount bushings?

hey, my right front strut on my 2010 tacoma 4x4 snapped at the bottom, right above the eyebolt. i went online to order the replacement but there were like 8 different choices.. i ordered what looked to be what I needed. compared the length of the new one compared to what came off and seemed to be about the same length.. installed the new one and ever since, the steering is ridiculously shady/scary, like hitting a bump or uneven surface in the road causes the whole thing to steer like the wheel is off the ground or something, hard to explain, just very different than it was... i plan on replacing the drivers side as well(would have at the time but is my only vehicle and funds were tight) what I'm wondering though is if what I ordered is not correct? i raised the front end of the truck up and compared the RF New strut compared to the LF Old strut still attached and can visibly see that the stem length of the new strut is 1" longer in length than the LF original. so i guess my question is, could it be acting this way because the drivers side is still the original with almost 220k miles on it and the new pass. side has less than 20 miles on it, making it act the way that it does due to extremely old n worn out on one side, and brand new on the other?? any and all responses are greatly appreciated! I've replaced a lot of struts on other vehicles in the past and have never had this issue.. this time though, i was rushed, doing outside in the middle of winter after working 3rd shift in a freckin carport so it was rushed, now I'm just trying to figure it out cause like I mentioned, it's scary to even drive but it's my only transportation currently.. thanks!
