Looking online it seems super clean or easy off will remove the chrome plating.
    Anyone done this?
I wanna get rid of the chrome on my surround and really didn’t want to paint it.

It will if one of the ingredients is caustic soda. Check the label. I’ve also heard the Wesleys Bleach White works also with out damaging the plastic. I’ve never tried it so I’d find something to test it on before I did the grill. Good luck and update with the results.

I tried the pressure washer method once. Made one hell of a mess.
Ended up buying a new aftermarket grill from rockauto fairly cheap.

Yep, get a sport grille that is color matched to the truck. Looks a lot better also.

I used Easy-Off to remove the chrome on my headlight reflectors when I did the BHLM. Worked like a charm, but you may need to do more than one application. For me, the first application of oven cleaner got about 90% of the chrome off. Do it outside and away from EVERYTHING. Oven cleaner is some nasty stuff. You don't want any overspray to get on anything, and when you rinse it off (I used a garden hose), be careful where the water splashes go.

I am going to attempt to vinyl wrap mine this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. 5X1.5 vinyl wrap was only $15, already have heat gun, little vinyl wrap tool kit on Amazon also $8. Even if you had to buy the heat gun, that's only about $45, plus you can always switch vinyl.

Appreciate the advice just trying to get out on the cheap.
I’d be fine with just the flat black.
I talked to our painter here at work and he’s done auto says he’s never had luck painting chrome.
Thought about the wrap also yes I have a heat gun.
I was gonna do the super clean this weekend maybe.
I’ll look to see how @JWILL10 wrap works out.
I’ll also look at prices for some sport grills.

    appreciate the help!

Another oven cleaner vote, used it on headlights and it worked well. Can paint afterwards. Buddy used bleach when doing his but it takes longer.

Literally did this last week, but bought the oem sport for the swap. Heres the label from the box; color matched mgm sport for late second gen. Would be cheaper sourcing online vs the local dealer where I went, but i didnt have the luxury of knowing the part number for this exact paint code, etc.

I used to use oven cleaner to clean old tractors before restoring them. I would buy it at the dollar store. I went once and got all they had, 19 cans. Went to checkout and the cashier says "you must have a big oven" without cracking a smile I responded "I do, and it's nasty" :D

Oven cleaner or muriatic acid will get the job done easily.

@Jeffch tried the vinyl wrap route this weekend and it was a total fail. I think for a couple reason's. The Vinyl wrap was on the cheaper side (Could've been an issue, not sure). I am really impatient and have never vinyl wrapped before. Just a huge fail. My next route will most likely be to just paint the grille or plasti-dip. Unless you know some that can vinyl wrap that won't charge an arm and a leg.

    Well that sucks.
I have seen vids and yes some wraps are easier to make conform than others.
I have a cheap aftermarket grille ordered should be here by the weekend.

I just have no patience, if i would've went with a brand like 3M or something of that magnitude like you said i think it would've been a little easier to get what i wanted it to do. I might have a local here wrap it for me. I am tired of this chrome look. Good luck with your aftermarket grille.

Grille showed up today not sure if I’m gonna put it on today?
Winter weather advisory and mid 20 degrees.
Under 100 and the center insert is removable also. Reviews said it wasn’t.
Looks pretty good will have to see how it fits?

I sanded the shit out of my chrome ring and put 5 coats primer and a couple coats black. Has held up quite well for over a year now.
