Streaming devices, Roku, Apple TV, fire stick, shield tricks and tips.

Ok, got rid of cable tv many years ago, and have had the list of streaming devices, given a few away.

recently picked up the nvidia shield pro, and have been trying to learn more about Kodi and what I can find that way.

So, what tips and tricks do you know for the streaming devices?

 

Kodi use to be great 5 years ago .Havnt tried to use it in a long time

Now I just stream Disney $9/month , Amazon Prime and Motor trend on demand $4 bucks / month .Between you tube and those three sources ,there is enough content to keep me busy

You can run ADD ONs as stand alone independent of KODI or use KODI to create a build containing multiple ADD ONs.

 

Best advice: if it doesn’t move then wire it. Don’t stream using wifi. You will have a much better experience and your neighbors will thank you.

 

Apple TV, Plex Media Server on your PC and a VPN. Netflix or some basic streaming service for when you are lazy, torrent the rest.

I run everything off a MacMini. It has a full size HDMI port that gos to the PrePro.

Even if you have a secure wifi, you will still contending for wifi channels. My daughter lives across the screen from high density housing. She has 320Mbit download yet everything freezes up or pixelates. I did a wifi scan and there are 30+ signals all clamoring for a channel. I've since wired every room in the house so the only thing she has on wifi is mobile devices. I bought her a 16 port switch which everything goes through now. She can stream to her heart's content and her and my son-in-law can work from home. I do that same for my home. If you are going to stream to your TV you need to do everything you can to get it there by Ethernet wire.

 

ya, heard about it a while back, just didn’t have a device I was willing to put it on, now the most expensive ever and I’m all for it.

I am also exploring Plex, a few months ago My brother opened my eyes to it. The Shield also comes prepared to be a Plex server.

 

Long time ago I ran cat 5 to my TV, I wish I had a few more ports back there for the different devices, may have to solve that soon.

 

I’ve been begun my research on VPN, Unlocator is running a 5 bucks a month 2 year contract. I used that a few years ago when I decided to go order mlb and couldn’t watch home team.

I have filelinked loaded already, but decided to stop messing with stuff till I figure out my router and vpn solution

 

I have Cat 5 in almost every room of my house, can I use that? What would I need to accomplish this? I know next to ZERO about this stuff....I'm a plug and play where this is concerned!

 

I built several Kodi RPi machines 5 or 6 years ago. It became too difficult to reliably get content. Toward the end it was a struggle to find servers that had anything we wanted to watch.

And who DOESN'T have a VPN in this day and age?

 

Plex is awesome. I have a headless server that holds all my media. Can access it from anywhere and share with friends who also have Plex.

 

Gotta find where they all terminate to. Then get a switch and have your router plugged into it (port configured as a trunk port). All the room cat5 ends plugged in to the switch and configured as access ports. It’s not terribly hard with some google-fu. Depending on the switch you get.
