I recently replaced CV boots on both shafts. Shafts are OEM and were in good shape. I went with OEM boot kits and all went well. I torqued all bolts to spec except the center hub bolt should have gone to 174 fl/lbs and my wrench only goes to 150lbs.

I think what I'm feeling and hearing is the rotors clank when I apply brakes. It also only happens if I just backed up and then go forward an apply the brakes, once I do this not more clank until I back up. If I had been going forward and then back up and apply the brakes, I get the clank, then when I go forward again... you guessed it... clank. It seems like sometimes it comes from the right side and sometimes the left side. Lug nuts are torqued to 85 lbs.

    Any thoughts?

The pads can do that in the caliper to cause that noise. You should really get a torque wrench that goes higher. Could probably borrow one from a parts store. You don't want to be going back in there for your wheel bearings next.

Thanks for the response. I have never needed one that went above 150. I'll dive back in and look things over. It sounds like the rotor is shifting forward and backwards but I don't see how with 85 ftlbs of the lug nuts.

Did you bend the dust shields at all the might be hitting on the spindle.

If you have been under and rotating things you should find it

If your calipers are working correct your pads should be tight if you had them off and bled things .

I did remove the caliper and rotor. I tied the rotor and spindle out of the way with bailing wire.

I feel like noise might be the holes in the rotor are larger than the wheel studs and the rotor is shifting once the brakes are applied. I might make a bushing or two for each rotor that will prevent this. It's strange that I replaced these rotor 30K miles ago and have not had this issue until now. I'm going to look at other possibilities too.

The wheel should be holding that rotor tight with the lugs. I have a similar noise, have your greased the rear driveshaft slip? That can sometimes fix a similar problem.

My noise is still there but I also have worn lower control arm bushings, I'm assuming it's just sliding around a little.

Did you torque the 4 bolts on the ball joints?

I agree that the lugnuts should be holding the rotor tight.

I've grease all driveline zirks 4K miles ago. The noise isdefinitely coming from the front and it only happens when I apply the brakes after switching from going either forward or reverse. I can make it happen on demand now that I know this.

Take a look at the lower control arm bushings. I never figured my noise out, but it's the only thing that hasn't been replaced on my truck.

I have made note of that and the brake shields and things that have been mentioned here. Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to check things out in the morning.... when the garage is nice and cool.

I found a smoking gun. The brake caliper bolts on the passenger side were snug but not torqued. This was causing the caliper to shift when I applied the brake which explains why it only happened after changing directions(from forward to reverse or vise versa). I buttoned it all back up and rotated the tires while I was there(5K miles). I backed up and went forward several times in the driveway and the noise is GONE.

I appreciate all of the feedback and ideas on this.
