So recently my cat went out and i’ve decided to straight pipe my 2008 2.7l Tacoma to gain more outflow/horsepower. I want a deeper tone but not a very loud muffler to go with it. I’ve looked at other threads and saw some some good sounding mufflers but they all had cats on the truck and i’m assuming mine would sound much different. Does anyone have any suggestions?

typically you would have a cat, muffler, and resonator, all of which offer a bit of damping on their own

    more horsepower?
I'm sure putting a straight pipe on a 2.7 gives it 1000hp and Ferrari songs

because cats are required for smog and rotten egg smell when there is no cat
most people would fix the cat issue

All you're gonna get is backfire popping and buzzing. The exhaust on a 2.7 is not causing a restriction.

Why not delete the cat but keep the stock muffler for now? Might be the sweet spot, getting a different muffler might make it too loud.

A straight piped 4 banger sounds like a cacophony of shotgun shells in a blender and more than likely you will actually loose power, definitely some low end torque will be lost, at most +3hp at the high end.

Replace your cats, leave the rest alone, if you want a deeper tone get a muffler but they drone is going to drive you insane.

If you want more power from your exhaust you need an equal length header to replace your cast manifold and even then it makes almost no difference until you go forced induction.

You have a 2008, you best bet for cheap power is to replace your in tank pump/filter combo with a URD remote filter kit and high flow pump and then have your injectors sent out and cleaned and flow marched by Witchhunter Performance, but again your talking high single digit gains at best.

I want Ferrari songs. I guess I'd be better off getting a Ferrari and not a Taco.

Not a Tacoma, but, Ferrari into Toyota isn't a first.

As for Ferrari songs, you need a flat plane crank and 8+ cylinders for that or you'll never achieve it.

Just do it. Add a resonator if it’s too loud. Auto or manual?

If my memory serves me right by removing the cat you removed an oxygen sensor so your ECU has no way to regulate the air/fuel mixture and believe it will lean out and engine will run hotter and could blow the head gasket.

Nope, just fix it. No gains to be had on the 2.7

Ahhhhh..... the early 70's power adder.......

    Didn't work in the 70's. Don't expect it'll work in the 2020's.

FWIW, modern engines are tuned with all the intake and exhaust doodads to balance fuel efficiency, EPA regs and power. Whatever you do will likely unbalance the system.

Do as you wish. Good Luck.

BTW, don't forget to flip the air cleaner lid......:rofl::rofl:

Mine is straight piped and i added three borla straight thru mufflers to tone it down. Im happy with how it sounds and its not loud by any stretch. If u run any muffler other than stock without cats its gonna be very loud unless you add more mufflers or resonators
