Should be no need to on a port injected engine like the 2.7l and 4.0l as the fuel injectors spray the back of the intake valves and keep them relatively clean.

Direct injected engines tend to suffer from carbon buildup on the intake valves since there is no fuel spraying on them to keep them clean.
This is part of the reason Toyota (and some other manufacturers) uses the D4S (port + direct) injection system on direct injected engines, they run in port injection mode under some conditions for better performance and to clean the valves.

One thing you do want to keep clean on all engines is the throttle body as they all get buildup on them which can cause idle issues and poor driveability at low throttle angles.

When I clean my MAF, I don't disconnect the battery. When I put it back together and start it up, it is easily a1,000, RPM higher than what is a normal idle. Then the RPM starts dropping in increments to a normal idle.
