It's been covered many times with some varying opinions if you do a search. For me, nothing beats a set of Michelin Defender LTXs for mostly pavement 4 season driving with some occasional snow (to 6-8 inches) and dirt/gravel roads.

I like the Michelins too. But if he doesn't drive a lot may be wasting money. Those tires last a long time and while they are expensive initially the longevity makes them a good choice. But if they will dry rot before he gets the mileage out of them may be better off with a similar, but cheaper tire.

Uniroyal Laredos - made by the same company as Michelin but this is their budget line. Granted, they won't be as quiet or perform the same but they will definitely be cheaper. I have Defenders but my tire guy recommended the Uniroyals when I bought tires last. I can't really say if they're actually good or not.

 You dodged a bullet there...
My advice to Mrs Green: "if I die, never buy a Uniroyal tire".

I consider them the worst name brand tire available, a friend sold tires for over 50 years, he agrees.

Notice on the budget and buy here - pay here car lots, if they put new tires on they are always Uniroyal.

For the OP: If you are in a mild climate and don't off road the stock Firestone Destinations are quiet, offer good wet grip and seem to wear well, I got a set of take offs with 200 miles for a good price.

I remember the TV ads from a long time ago, 1973 in this photo.
Maybe they were a less bad tire back then...

Michelin ltx ms2 is what I had on my 4x2 previous taco. GREAT tire. I believe is a brother of the defender. Maybe older tire? Don’t know..

    I'd check the online reviews.
Most are going to suggest what they currently have on, aside from stock tires.

The Defenders may well be the finest tire known to man :notsure: -- they are also a $275 tire...

The OP also stated he doesn't drive much, hard to justify dropping $1100+ from what he has described.

Aggressive sidewall for highway terrain tire, excellent on road manners

I recently purchased a set for my ‘17; highly recommend.

Anybody try the Kumho Crugen HT51? I'd like to get Defenders, but for them to make sense you need to get the mileage out of them, and to be honest I just won't. My '18 Sport only has 25k miles in 5 years (Stock Toyos are just about done, even with rotation every 5k miles), Defenders would probably age out before I put 75k miles on them. I like that these LOOK kind of like Defenders, and they get decent reviews.

My garage queen '98 has rarely seen any miles in the past 18 or so years. Maybe 500 miles a year. I still get it new tires every 8 years or so. It's the only thing that actually connects the truck to the pavement and I don't see it as a place to skimp. It's also an opportunity for me to try out different tire brands without being stuck with something that might be a poor daily driver. I have a set of Kumho AT's I'll be taking off at the end of the summer with less than 5000 miles.

    Another vote for the Michelin.
No better tire for the road.-

AND they do amazingly well offrad, in the snow, and in the wet too!
