Bluetooth and aux input added to stock JBL sound system. Full coverage skid plate.
There is some great information in various threads about stock radio swaps on this site but also some misinformation. Having just completed the task—early year 2nd Gen Tacoma trucks can be upgraded with OEM head units manufactured through 2012 without modifications. The harness is plug and play. Modification is only necessary if you wish to add AUX and/or Satellite Radio connections. A point of clarification on JBL vs non-JBL systems: my 2006 SR5 access cab with the premium sound system is branded with the JBL logo on the driver's side lower speaker grille. While it is a JBL system in name, it does not use the JBL head unit and did not have an amp or subwoofer. I think that is where some of the confusion between systems originates. My supposition is that since the access cab version of the truck did not have room for a sub or amp, Toyota simply went with the non-JBL hardware and slapped a JBL badge on the door. If you have a crew cab and premium sound, your configuration may differ.

    My upgrades are as follows:
    • Swapped A51809 radio with AD1808
    • Bluetooth and AUX connectivity with USA SPEC BT-TOY module
    • Audio upgrade with Sony XMS400D amp and Rockford Fosgate OEM compatible speakers
    • Dedicated USB connection and updated power ports with a 2014 lower center dash and aftermarket USB outlets. Note that the lower center dash will fit model years from 2005-2014 without modification.
    • Additional USB and AUX 3.5mm audio connection inside the console
    • Backup assist with Master Tailgater LCD mirror and tailgate camera
I know that some may find it puzzling that I didn't simply upgrade the entire head unit to aftermarket. The reasoning is simple: I like the fact that the OEM audio system does not encourage theft. The above setup delivers contemporary options while also being unobtrusive. The sound is considerably improved over stock. It won't vibrate the truck to pieces, but I wasn't after that.

I will cross reference links to the threads that I used in order to give credit to those folks who did the original work.

IMG_0603.jpg Curious how you went about adding the mic. I swapped in a touchscreen unit from a 2012, it was as you said plug & play, bluetooth enabled, etc. only thing I haven’t done is added the mic so I can have hands-free calling

The model of radio that I used does not have bluetooth. It does have AUX and SAT capability. I gained my bluetooth connection, including the microphone hook up, with the USA SPEC bluetooth module. In your case it seems like you would need to figure out the correct harness connection on the back of your radio and tap into those specific pins.

Hey I have a Bluetooth module that connect to the oem radio. My truck is an 05 and I can sell the radio with module for 50 bucks. Served me well but now I have an excelon as a head unit.
