Rare, as in less made than other models, yes.

Like anything else, some find that desirable. Some not so much.

All that matters is that you like it.

My 96 SR5 had them originally. It has sliders on it now but I still have them in storage.

I think these kind of data are proprietary to Toyota though as far as how "rare" they are.

I see one on the freeway once in a while. Less common than regular Tacoma's. Rare, but not in a good way.

My boss bought one in 2005 used, first step side and first facelift white cluster tacoma I had seen. Still remember how nice it was. The box was tiny though haha.

I can probably count on one hand the number of step side Tacomas I've seen in person, I'd say they're pretty rare. I don't think Toyota ever just made them, I think it was an option you had to specifically request when you ordered a brand new one or you'ed get a fleet side.

I bet the number of people who actually step on the sides of their stepsides is even rarer.

My 2001 Toyota Tacoma S-Runner was a step-side. When I was looking for a tonneau cover, the only kind that would fit were the snap around leather ones.

Ended up swapping to a fleet side bed and am very happy. Also went with this metal roll-up tonneau cover. Step-side bed dates the truck immediately and it's hard to look past with modern body add-ons (newer lights, rims, ect.). I would mob a step-side if I body worked the rear and collapsed the "bumps" at the very rear and folded it into itself. Lot's of body work on thin metal, not worth it.

I think the step side 1st gen Tacos look rad

Only a mother could love the look of a step side Tundra though

That's a nice truck and I like the color. The flaresides are cool in their own right.

I have to wonder what Toyota was thinking with introducing a flare side? GM and Ford had them back then, I can't recall Dodge having a flare side, after the step sides went away.

Was there that many people who wanted a flareside? Would you not buy a fleet side Tundra, and go buy a domestic flare side?

Was the composite bed the reason their wasn't a 2nd gen Tacoma flareside?
