anyone ever tried a steering wheel spinner? I have the 6sp and was thinking it might be handy to have. I used to drive a boat that had one and it was excellent.

    anyone have experience or thoughts?

I have heard that they are illegal in most states (except for handicapped people) because in a crash it would put a cue-ball sized hole in your chest or head. Not sure if that is true, but something to think about.

brucedog, no doubt, I did consider it. It would seriously suck to get into an accident with that on your steering wheel.

BUT I still want to know...

I think that it was a major concern when lap belts where the only safety restraint. Assuming the airbag deploys I don't know how you would hit the steering wheel. For the OP check your local ordinance. As a side note I wonder how many revolutions of the wheel get you from lock to lock? Just thinking you may not get the same benefit as with the boat.

Nope... don't have one on my boat either. Maybe it's more of a tractor thing.

Know what they used to call those things, don't you? Back in the 50s they we're known as necker knobs. Driver of the car could have his girlfriend snuggled up close, put his arm around her, and on those old non-power steering cars that took about 20 turns lock to lock, could still drive the car as he cruised up and down Main St. Stop at a red light and he was already in the make-out position. Don't ask me how I know that.

I know that there is an actual name for it and I can't remember what it was. Where I'm from it's illegal to have them on vehicles. For some reason we had them on a machine that I worked at. I personally think that they're cool but I wouldn't want one of those in the face, chest in an accident.

    ^^^^Suicide Knob.

Not really necessary in a modern vehicle with power steering, but I do believe in doing what you want with your own vehicle.

make backing up 18 wheelers easier. I have seen what happens when you have a front steer tire blow out aswell, broken, or dislocated thumb.

The knob is free spinning I'm talking about turning the wheels as far as you can left to right or lock to lock as in steering lock. My dad had a suicide knob on his 1956 buick special with manual steering. It had a pin-up picture of a topless red head on it. They still sell these with that same picture.

Say what you will, but we used suicide knobs on our 55 ton wreckers overseas. Those knobs worked like a dream! Of course the laws over there were a bit more lenient.

I always called them brodie knobs.

    They work good on tractors.

But I think illegal for road use in autos?
