Yes , added steering wheel controls to mine but only the right side . If your aftermarket head unit has bluetooth for the telephone controls , you will need a controller to go with it .
You are going to need an air bag for steering wheel controls . There is enough information between these 2 threads to get you started

To much stuff on that windshield. Blocks view and must be a huge distraction when driving.

I have an 08 that has factory steering wheel controls for the head unit, and I have a Pioneer aftermarket head unit. To make it sync, you need to use a control box that takes the steering wheel control signals and makes them work in the head unit. I did that, and it all worked great at first. After a few months the volume stopped working, and another 6-8 months later nothing worked. I tried reprogramming th unit and there was nothing different. IMO it was a huge waste of time and money trying to get the steering wheel controls to work with my Pioneer head unit. About 1 year ago I removed the control unit all together because I was concerned it may cause some kind of other issues behind the dash or screw up my head unit. I did all of this back in 2009, so maybe the newer equipment is better........

Not sure your tacoma works like my old subaru but I was able to take a factory steering wheel that had audio controls and plug it into the harness on the clock spring behind the airbag. It just worked.

Steering wheel controls on the Dasaita unit (I have one as well) are super easy. It has a built in programmer for the controls.

Again, not sure if your Tacoma has the harness already there, but toyota does that pre-installed harness thing all over the place.

Was planning on using a 2014 steering wheel along with the airbag, would that work?

I think you can just buy the controls with the cable and connect them around the clock spring. I have the controls on the left side for Radio and im thinking about adding the Bluetooth controls on the right by doing the same thing.

How do you like that radio and was it a direct fit or did you have to do some cutting to a dash kit to make it work?

Still to much blocking the view . Have been to the various Caribbean Islands and it still would cause a possible problem for me.

Glad you plan to move the radio. Where I am used to driving there's a lot of animals that can pop out and you need complete visibility. Also erratic drivers and cyclists. I know you feel fine with it, and all the power to you, but it does increase the risk of a collision. I don't like my wife's Chevy just because the pillars are thick and have hidden many vehicles I should have been able to see.

Best of luck with the steering wheel control mission though, keep us updated how it goes.

So I opened up the steering wheel shroud this morning,it only have 3 wires connected to the clock spring, but there are wires leading to the he. The three that are connected is for the cruise control. I have a steering wheel and airbag for a 2014 Corolla coming in by next week, will have to check if the Corolla clock spring is compatible. Will update once I get it.

Steering wheel upgrade update- Finally got the steering wheel and airbag, unfortunately I will have to replace clock spring cause mine doesn’t have pins for swc, ordered one already.
Radio was a direct fit no trimming.
