I am new to this forum so forgive me if I'm repeating prior posts. Due to a power steering leak, some amateur troubleshooting, a lack of time and ability, I landed at the Toyota dealership. Turns out my steering gear is extremely worn and rusted. This is a 2005 with 260,000 miles. I'm looking at a $1600 repair bill. The part is $650 or so with the labor being the rest. Is this even remotely reasonable? Considering I only have about $1500 in total repair bills in 12 years, I can't really complain but it's still a big chunk of change I wasn't planning on spending.

complete steering rack was 250 on ebay and another 100 for the hoses

I did it my self in two weekends and every bolt was rusty and fighting me

Steering gear + fluid = maybe $700 worth of parts total if buying new from the dealer.

Unless they're charging $200/hr that seems steep. Book labor time is only ~4 hours w/o alignment, figure 5 hours total labor with alignment since they'll inevitably charge the alignment separately. Still, too expensive on labor.

You certain there aren't more parts on that repair estimate? Pump, hoses, belt, etc.

Thanks for the replies. Research on the web confirmed the price for the parts. I assumed the dealer would be a tad high but at least the parts are coming with a lifetime warranty. Not sure I need another 260,000 miles but whatever. I will confront them on the labor charge once I get the final invoice. I don't mind paying a little upcharge but it has to be reasonable. They did give me a free loaner and, since I'm basically dependent on a vehicle for work, that is a big bonus for me. As I said earlier, it's hard to complain. I'm at 260,000 miles with about $3,000 in total repairs. I got a new frame free of charge a few years ago as well as rear springs and all the stuff they couldn't remove without damage. Weighing the whole thing out per mile, it's still the cheapest vehicle I've ever owned.
