Hello All, I will be changing tires soon from my stock 265/65r-17’s to 255/75r-17’s. The spare tire/rim on my 2020 Sport is 16” (sigh) and I have a 5th 255/75r17 to use as a spare. I have found several inexpensive steel 17 inch rims that are compatible with Tacoma/FJ’s etc. My question is, If I get a flat at some point and need to use the spare, will my stock lug nuts designed for my stock Sport rims work with the steel wheels? Or do I need to use old school conical lug nuts for the steel wheels?

I bought a set of OEM alloy wheels to replace my stock steel ones not too long ago. Haven't got around to having them installed yet. However, the set of alloys came with lug nuts and they appear to me to be the same exact nuts as what I already have. Can't speak to what you have but mine are identical.

Alloy lugs are different they are shouldered with washers.

    Steel lugs are simply tapered.

    These are what you need.

I guess the next time I rotate the tires I’ll see if my lug nuts are tapered. They might be because my 16” spare is a steel wheel. I might be over thinking this.

The washered nuts pictured above still have a taper designed to work with steel spare wheels for temporary use. The owners manual even outlines this, or at least it used to.

As long as they are conical seats yes. If they are different, just throw 6 lug nuts that will work with the spare in the glove box or in with the jack and lug wrench for if you need to install the spare.
