I purchased a set of Tacoma silver painted steel wheels (6 lug) in order to save my aluminum rims from the winter on my 2012 Sport. The center caps that came with the rims had mangled clips and none of the 4 would stay attached. I just purchased 4 new caps online and the clips on these new caps will not hold either. There are 6 locations for clips but each cap only has 4 clips, similar to the first set of caps. The steel rims are from a 2nd gen.

I am not new to aluminum or steel wheels or the caps, but this has got me baffled.

Am I missing something here? Seems to me they should snap on tight, but the clips don't even extend past the edge of the center hole.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Mine have all had 4 clips. Once I pushed them on, I would kick them a few times to make sure they were seated. I don't bother to run center caps any more though.

    58 Siesta,
Thanks for the reply. These clips do not even come close to holding the rim. In fact with the rim laying flat the caps has side to side movement. On one cap, I bent the clips outward, but it still did not hold the rim. Maybe there are different versions of the wheels or caps. I am at a loss.

not sure. Sorry I can't be of more help. I just painted the center of the hub to match my rims and got rid of the caps.

Well I have run them without caps the last 2 winters, just wanted to dress it up a bit. Guess I will continue to run them without caps.

    Thanks

I figured out the problem. The caps are held in place by the wheel hub (hub centric). With the wheel off the vehicle the cap fits so loosely that it falls off when the wheel is turned upright. The cap must be held in place when mounting the rim to the truck, but once the lug nuts are installed the cap is very tight.

I thought the cap would fit tightly with the wheels off the truck like the aluminum sport rims. I thought wrong. All good now.
