Alright, so I've looked pretty intensively into this issue with no results.

I recently installed a StartX remote start on my 2018 sr5 (h key, non push start) and am now having some strange start up issues.

Occasionally the remote start will not work. When this happens, I hop inside, start the truck manually with the key. With the lights in the off or DRL setting, the engine seems to rev and lose power, enough to the point of the truck shutting down. All electronics do not work inside, i.e.- Radio, dash lights, overhead lights etc. HOWEVER, as soon as I turn the headlights on, the truck and all electronics boot right up, the engine stops the weird revving and everything is normal. Is this a remote start issue, and fuel pump issue(which has not been replaced via recall yet), or a ghost in the machine issue?

    Thanks

Seriously, Toyota's electrical system/electronics are VERY sensitive to mods that touch any part of those systems. I don't profess to have any real answers, but I would first look to the last mod that touched those systems.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up taking the box out and everything is running fine. Will probably just return at this point.

N2 Designs makes a good remote start kit. Takes about 45 minutes...no further issues. Phone app is not an option.

Just purchased my startx and was working perfectly fine up until recently. It started doing the same exact thing you’re describing!
Did you end up finding a solution or did you just end up returning the product?

I just ended up returning it. Didn't feel like messing with any electronics further and potentially cause more issues. I havent installed another remote start either.

I have the N2 kit with remote start and phone app. I use it occasionally in the Texas heat. Is the lack of phone app in your implementation related to no ‘push to start’? I swear I feel like Dick Tracy starting my truck from my watch.

Maybe you guys got a bad batch? I’ve been using my startx remote start H key for two years with no issues. The tpms alert drove me crazy though and I wired in some relays to completely disable the remote start when the key is inserted though.

I was playing around with the wires and module right now to try to figure out why it’s acting strange. I noticed when the circular ground connection connected to the 10mm bolt is moved a little it messes with the power inside the truck. Like even though I’ll have my headlights as “off”, the night lights on the dash will be on and if I turn off the truck it will tell me to turn my headlights off. Strange stuff like that. Don’t know if anyone has an explanation for this. Ive emailed the company about this but they won’t be able to get back to me until sometime tomorrow.

I noticed this today after installing a Start-X remote start. Did you end up diagnosing this issue? I literally can't use the headlights "OFF" setting anymore!

I eventually just emailed them, returned the old one and received a new one. Since I’ve installed the new one it’s been working perfectly fine and I don’t have issues like I did before.
Still have no idea why the first one acted strange though.
Might be completely unrelated but the first problems started when a buddy and I both tried remote starting our cars right next to each other.
Could have caused the issue? I don’t know.

I also have the same exact model Tacoma as yourself, could be a 2017 SR5 thing for all we know.

Same model, no kidding, hmm. Did you get new module and harnesses both? They're sending me a new module this week since mine is stuck on red, but wondering if I should just ask for new harnesses too in one fell swoop. I'll send them an email.

    Thanks for your help!
