Hurricane season is almost here. Two years ago it toom me 18 hrs to reach the georgia border. All the fuel stations were empty, luckily i had a bunch of tanks but it took way to much space. Im taking out the useless spare and putting a 20 gallon tank in its place. Ill be removing the whole tire crossbar and winch mechanism and will be welding up no stiffening cross bars and straps to secure the tank.

Ill be making a fueling panel to replace the oem left storage box in the bed. There you will find the filler neck , system power, switch for fuel pump and a fuel gauge. There will be a master switch inside the cabin in my command center (right side switch).Ill be doubling the capacity by about 95%.. Lets see!

Looks cool. I saw a pretty cool system for 4Runners that attaches to the current fill neck. You fill the tank like normal and once the main tank is full, the fuel backs up the neck to fill the aux tank.

while driving, when you get low, you just hit a button on the dash to pump fuel from the aux tank to your main tank. If you forget to turn off the pump, overfill is impossible because the tank just dumps back in to the aux tank.

I don’t know what kind of system you are looking to set up; but it seems more complicated than that one.

Looks awesome, but what if you get a flat tire? :boink:

Wow, I cant image what you are going through. But honestly sounds like a lot of work for the amount of time required. I would just throw the tank in the box, instead of a bunch of little tanks.

    Good luck Hector.

Yeah my first thought as well. Doesn't matter how much gas you have with a flat tire and no spare.

Id keep the spare, buy these and toss em in the bed when you need to skip town.

I’m with OP, this is a great decision. I have 4, 5 gallon cans that’s I always keep full of fuel in case we have to leave last minute. Or you know, to fill my lawnmower.

I could have used that some time ago, nice tanks. Where the spare tire goes is useless space because my tire wont be fitting in there. Getting 35's. Also check out the tire rack i made.

Telling her that would be more dangerous than the hurricane itself! Your house may not be there when you get back so you need to take your papework etc.

Curious how this project finished up. I have been dreaming about an aux tank for some time. When I'm pulling my camper the wind resistance brings me down to about 11 MPG, when I'm going into the mountains it can be even less. At that rate, me and my wife can easily outlast the fuel.

Imagine of Toyota would offer a larger or twin-tank option (like my old Scout). I would have added it just to have it.

    OP any updates on this?

I'm considering doing the same. Wife and are will be living out of our Tacoma on a multi year road trip through north/south America starting in late 2022.

Even while we're still here, I hate the 300 mile range. It's just not enough, I don't want to stop to have to stop 4 times for fuel on a 3 day trip to west Virginia.
