Starting in which year, did the "automatic Start-Stop" feature become standard in Tacoma's. I know it can be shut off (temporarily) by a button, but would rather not even have it.

I’ve never heard of that feature in a Tacoma but if you’re doing research for an upcoming purchase, I can tell you that my 2021 SR5 does not have that technology.

I’m not sure if that helps or not.

Tacoma's don't have this. You're referring to the truck turning off while sitting idle at a stop light, right? If so, Tacoma's don't have that. My truck has never auto-turned off that way.

It will shut off automatically IF (and only if): I'm sitting stationary in park for 30 minutes (I believe it's 30 minutes?).

Hope they never add it to Tacomas. I will never own any vehicle that shuts off at a busy intersection. Not to mention the oil starvation at every single startup

Thank you all for you quick (and welcome) replies. We currently have a Subaru Forester but having the engine shutting off whenever you come to a complete stop, especially in Massachusetts traffic, is not something to look forward to. I know it can be disabled by a button but it is a potential point of expensive failure.

You'll love the Tacoma because it's very "Analog", and none of them have that start-stop crap in them. Since you're in a snow/salted road area, get the frame coated IMMEDIATELY after you buy it, then every single year.

....and don't let the wife touch your truck. Ever.

I have the 2017 Forester and am very happy with it.
    I also have a 2021 SR5 and love it as well. ( V6 / 4WD / Access Cab )

I would never buy anything with this start-stop b.s. on it and would insist it be disabled.

I also love our 2012 Forester, but the 2018 was the last year without Start-Stop (I believe). It seems like car manufactures just add new technology features (some good, some bad but all expensive to repair) just as a selling point. I now can select a Tacoma new or used.

This is the #1 reason I ditched my previous truck and bought a Tacoma. I haven’t looked back since.

There’s a module you can buy that remembers your setting. Wife was frustrated with having to remember to disable it every time she started up her 21 forester. Did like 5 minutes of reasearch and bought some module for like $90. It plugs in under the drivers seat and works like a charm

Start/Stop tech is the work of the devil. I was ecstatic when I found out my new Tacoma didn't have it.

Just be careful with your selection. It's good to not have auto start-stop. But it's bad to not have intermittent wipers, or to have power locks that don't operate by a remote keyfob. Beware... you've been warned.. :hattip:

I'm all for it if it reduces the emissions, but let the owner disable it, not just tempoarily on every start up.

Toyota's is very mild and takes a lot to get it to engage. Almost all models have it now and will likely be on 2024 models.

The biggest issues are the batteries are wicked expensive. They have to be AGM and average 300$ here for 4 cylinders.

The starter also has a "death timer" like 300,000+ uses. But we've never seen one get that far.

Got an Oct 2022 build of a 2023 Tacoma... no auto start stop. Not sure it's even a thing yet.

I guess it really depends. :notsure:

Most vehicles I've been in with start-stop, once warm the engine would restart on less than a single revolution. Almost instant. Those cars don't bother me.

The Tacoma does not have such a quick start up. It would be a major annoyance. Or it would need a different design.

12000? For real? That seems really low…
What’s a death timer? Designed obsolescence?

Current Tacomas don't have auto start-stop. If it's introduced with the 4th gen, it may become possible to disable it in TechStream or with a ECU tune.

Rented a Kia sorrento a few weeks ago and found the auto start stop very tolerable, got used to it real quick.

Then again, driving an mt normally I’m accustomed to managing a delay while putting it into gear. The Kia startup was shorter than than that.

I'll look up the actual number. But basically yes.

Edited original post. It's 300,000+ A huge number.
