Does any of you all know where I can find stainless caliper pins for 2017 Tacoma front brakes? I have a stick and did them for the first time at almost 100k and they were a pain. I want to swap them for stainless to see if I can avoid that next time

Stainless would more than likely warp under the heat and your pads wouldn't slide.

The factory pins should be yellow zinc coated for corrosion resistance, the build up that makes them stick is caked on brake dust and road grime, again stainless pins wouldn't change that.

My wood stove has been burning all winter every winter for 14 years and the air diffusers on the top of the fire box are stainless steel and have done very well. That’s kind of why I wouldn’t mind trying stainless. I’m going to look into the grade because I know those things can take the heat. I just pulled them out last summer to replace the ceramic baffle and they were straight as could be so I’m sure the right grade of stainless could handle. I know those things don’t get as hot as that wood stove

I mean you're talking baffles spaced away from the heat energy source being wood burning; much lower temperatures than vehicle brakes and in a significantly less important system...

But if you want to redesign critical life saving equipment designed by life long ASE engineers to maybe save you a few minutes of annoyance every 100k miles...

    Uh...

You do you and I hope no one else gets hurt.

The pins really aren't important, bought a 2005 tundra used, the first thing I did amongst other things was a brake job. The previous owner had left the pins out at some point, and they weren't in the new brake kit either so I didn't even know they were missing. Fast forward 100k to the next brake job and there they are and I'm like "what are these for". The truck stopped fine and the brakes didn't wear weird or anything. As far as I can tell the only purpose these pins server is the stop the pads from falling out of the caliper if the truck is upside-down or something. They certainly aren't big enough to take any of the braking load.

What pins are you talking about? The pad slide pins are the only pins I'm aware of in the calipers and they're what keep your pads centered on the rotor and from falling out the back of the calipers.

The siezed or dragging pin you encountered was not caused by the material the pin is made out of. You did brakes for the first time at 100k miles. The moving parts on your truck all require preventative maintenance, (cleaning, inspection, and lubrication), by running them for 5 years untouched, with whatever lubricant was applied to them at the factory, you caused the failure. Also, there are things to consider other than vulnerability to rust/corrosion, such are wear resistance, hardness, toughness, etc...

TL;DR: Get oem pins and lubricate them with the purple stuff that permatex makes for brake hardware.

Why not? It sounds like the Honda dealer just did that to my daughter in-laws car.

You are absolutely right. Now I know and I’m going to do that preventative maintenance so I don’t have to go through what I did this time. It will probably be 100k before I do them again

Ignorance is bliss so the world said but there was nothing blissful about those brakes. My thought in asking was to see if there was something better. I’ll look into what you recommended because it’s a good thing to learn from others who have dealt with it. I believe that’s where wisdom comes from. Shared experience

I’ve seen those air tubes in a nice shade of red. They are directly in the firebox bringing air in the top for the secondary combustion of gases from the wood. They see extremely high temperatures. My thoughts for stainless was just because of the pitting and corrosion I saw on the pins after I had completely cleaned them off.
