    I have a 2019 SR5 4D 2WD. I am looking at trading for a 2020 SR5 4x4 or a 2020 TRD Offroad 4x4. The payment difference is $50. I want the 4x4 for not a lot but more light offroad camping.

I don't think I need the Offroad but for the small difference it seems like it may be a good option. I wanted to get some feedback from those who have either to find out the + and -. I've read (and seen) the differences but I'm thinking more long term like will there be more cost to maintain the offroad, will the offroad be more fun than the SR5, etc.

    I appreciate any feedback.

Get the one YOU want, you have to live with it and drive it everyday. Major differences are key-less entry, crawl control and bigger rear diff.

Have you tried using your 2WD SR5 on the light offroad camping trails you intend to use? It may suffice and you'll realize you never needed 4WD. I'm not sure what you mean by the payment difference is $50, but right now is not the best time to try and buy a Tacoma. You'll be paying MSRP if you're lucky. Unless your 2019 is paid off, you'll be negative if trading it in, and than paying MSRP or more for a new Tacoma. As far as common sense goes, I would keep the 2019 until inventory catches up.
As far as your question; if you're not offroading, you might as well save the money and go with the SR5 4x4 if you really want to go from 4x2 to 4x4. I know a lot of people say the OR is only $1500 or so more than the SR5, but $1500 is $1500. You could buy some nice accessories with the money saved.

Ultimately, it's your choice. Buy what makes you happy.

Yes, I did and a good bit of slippage, and it was not that steep nor muddy. It's a 350 vs 400 a month payment. I'm still thinking about it but appreciate the feedback!

All of these trucks are fun off road, so either one will check that box. If you're new to off roading and think you would benefit from crawl control and the multi-terrain select, get the Off Road. Heck, if you just like the Off Road better and have the money, go for it. If you like both equally and don't care about the additional features on the Off Road, the SR5 is a great truck and should be more than capable of doing light off roading and you'll save some money on it. Test drive both a few times and see what you like.

Supply is pretty limited right now, so keep that in mind. Check out the thread below, if you haven't already. Lots of info in there about pricing a 2020 Tacoma.

My guess is that at trade-in time, (or private sale) the TRD OR will get a few more $ and/or sell faster, so that could be a factor with the decision making process.

I went with an SR5. I tow a small camper and do some light off road driving occasionally. I also live where we get a winter that is sometimes a lot of snow, sometimes not. Having a 4x4 in a truck or SUV here is almost required for any trade in value and dealers don't like to see a 4x2 on the lot due to limited interest in them here. now is not a good time to buy a tacoma but I got mine last week, it was not easy to get one in but it did it for a few thousand under MSRP. My thinking is I can upgrade the suspension later when I have the truck paid down more and its time for tires and such if I decide i need it. the SR5 is fairly well equipped too in my opinion. I considered the OR but 2 things, I wasn't sure about the fob only key system and I've been off road in my old Jeep and never needed a locker and the electronic off road gizmos. If its a truck you plan to keep for many years then the fact that an Off road might sell faster or for a few $ more isn't that big.

I'd equate this to buying a house. Are you looking to buy and keep for a long time, if so, than resale doesn't matter. Buy what makes you happy.
If you're looking to buy and sell within 5 years, than go with the model that will offer the better resale.

If the difference is $50, then all other things being equal, get the offroad. Beefier rear diffential with e-locker, and all the little bells and whistles. Mostly though, it's just a slightly nicer truck than the SR5. Unless you're planning to mod the hell out of it, you're getting more truck with the OR, and if they're the same price... I just can't imagine getting the SR5.

Rather have the SR5 for my needs. Plan on it being a long term truck. My offroading consists of getting to camps and trails so no biggie there. Lots of snow so needed 4wd. Don't need locker.

I rather have $50 in my pocket each month. $600 a year could buy me other things for the truck. And I doubt I'd ever use multi terrain select or crawl control. Only thing that would interest me is a larger diff, but that says nothing about the construction of whats inside the diff so doesn't imply better quality.

"TRD-OR" is a branding, marketing label. It's not like the ORs are mean offroad machines. They're largely road trucks, designed for comfort. OR comes with slightly beefier/better suspension, a different diff (because of the locker), and some other features that may or may not be important to you. But it's not like has some amazing offroad capabilities that "you don't need. Woah, too much to handle." It's just a truck for fat Americans. Come on. When an OR goes offroad, chances are it's upside down and it's off the road because the driver fell asleep.

How many years is that over? $50 a month is a big difference in the long run.

Comparing a 4x4 SR5 to a 4x4 OR has some minor interior differences, but the main capability difference is the rear locker. The OR does have a more advanced traction control system, but the SR5 still has traction control that works pretty well. You can always add a locker to the SR5 later if you need one.

I do lots of trails with my SR5, some of them fairly gnarly, and haven't needed lockers yet. Lockers make it easier, but the SR5's traction control still works great. The link to my build thread's in my signature, look at the video on there from Choccolocco, I ran just fine with all the locked Tacomas.

Where are you getting front and rear lockers installed for less than 1800 bucks?

I don't know how accurate this is, but based on the OP's original statement of $50 difference in payment. If you take $50 over 60 months, that's $3k difference. Not exactly a small amount of money.

4x4 is like a condom. You are better off having it and never needing it then needing it when you don't have it.
