My 2015 Tacoma has been making this noise lately. It goes away after you drive it some. It only makes the noise when in gear and moving.

    https://youtu.be/fwIKutIDni0

I'm assuming it must be the u-joint, but I replaced the driveshaft about 60k miles ago. It was making a similar noise, but not as loud as this. Truck has about a 2-3 inch lift on it, so maybe that is causing the u-joint issues?

    Thanks for any advice.

Yes, the noise starts when I let go of the brakes and the truck starts moving...

I would try greasing them if they have zerks....60K miles is a LONG time without any grease....let us know once youve greased them if it still does it. Do the front ones as well!!

This is the only zerk fitting I could see on the main driveshaft (see attached)... The front ones, however, look like this: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

I'm guessing this aftermarket driveshaft has "sealed" u-joints? Any way to get grease in there?

In any case, I got a grease gun and will try greasing that center fitting this evening. Strangely, the sound has disappeared.

I did have to change the front driver-side wheel bearing recently, it was definitely bad. Had a lot of side-to-side play when jacked up. But the others are all stock with 203k miles on them. I guess they should be changed, as well.

well with those style, you can remove the bolts on the drive shaft remove a cap and pump it full and go from there, now its not as nice as just replacing the u joints with gresable units and then its never an issue again.

that is the slip joint, grease it, but no zerks huh? then yes, they would be sealed units(why, I dont know. oh wait I do...so you'll spend more money once they dry out). Id look at your carrier bearing as well! you can always jack up the ass end, and rotate the wheels to see if you can get it to squeak..and from the pics, you live in a dry climate as there is ZERO rust that I see...

Gotcha, I ordered some Spicer greaseable u-joints and another wheel bearing assembly for the passenger side.

I live in VA, but I try to keep the underside rinsed off during the winter!

Is there any reason to worry about the CV axles? Or anything I should do to maintain and/or test to see if they need replacing.

I'm a little worried about maintenance since I installed the lift/leveling kit (Bilstein 6112s and 5100s with an AAL, I think it's 2.5" front and 1.5" rear). Control arms are still stock.

Unless the CV's are slinging grease, I wouldnt worry and with that little of a lift, again not really worry until they sling grease or start popping around corners. Have you done the ECGS bushing yet? when you do your CVs, I would do that as well on the drivers side (google it). and damn, you keep it clean!!

I finally got the new ujoints installed... what a pain. The old ones were very greased though.

However, the center bearing was very sloppy and oscillated when spun. It was hard to get the new one on (nut in the yoke was seized, had to blowtorch it). Also was hard to get it torqued back to 134 ft lbs. The carrier bearing is now kind of hard to turn by hand. Should it be this tight?

Does anyone know what to torque these little bolts to? See attached.

I'll definitely check those ECGS bushings out when I decide to do the CV axles!

Torque those to about as tight as you can get them with a 10mm box-end by hand

Gotcha... just read that the center yoke nut should be torqued to 134 ft lbs and then backed off and retorqued to 51 ft lbs. I have mine all together at 134 ft lbs. Should I go to 51 you think?
