Best way I can describe it is sputtering, loss of power and ability to accelerate normally. Seems like rpms are pretty high for the speed I've noticed it happening at. Truck has been tougher to start over time , not sure if that has to do with it but maybe? This sputtering deal came out of nowhere but I've noticed a wierd slip into gear every now and then too. From my research I understand it could be spark plugs , fuel pump or filter , coils, etc . I'll obviously start with checking out and replacing the fuel filter and peek at the spark plugs . Amy suggestions on what you think or how I should go about this so I can fix this before something ( like the fuel pump ) or worse happens . Thanks alot !

Also forgot to add that if I accelerate slowly it doesnt seem to happen as noticeably.

Sounds like a transmission issue, check your transmission fluid. If I read your post right, it sounds like your engine is revving high when you experience these issues. That’s a sign the transmission is having problems staying in gear.

No check engine lights on. I just found an old service record from before I owned it and the MAF sensor was replaced about 25 miles ago ? Based on what I've read as well, ive definitely had some of those symptoms for longer then I've realized. Any thoughts on this ? I'm assuming it's normal for these sensors to go but that tells me something else could possibly cause the sensor to fail again and again (vacuum leak? Maybe?)

If you have no light and it does work it is in the fuel system.

Your air filter is clean ??

I would change the fuel filter see if that corrects things and it never hurts .

Yeah I will definitely do a fuel filter while I'm at it , check the air filter , the injectors ( throw some cleaner in ) I'll go from there and update later . Thank you for the input

Sounds like spark plugs to me. Any idea last time they were changed... and/or the plug wires?

Check the cleanliness of the MAF, also inspect the spark plug wires for any cuts/loose.

Check that MAF sensor to make sure it's a Denso branded one and not some aftermarket brand or worse yet, a fake Denso. I imagine you'd be throwing a code if the MAF was the culprit but maybe not

Unless it was replaced by Toyota, in which case probably don't need to worry about it

I've got an Amazon no name brand for $40 and it was better than the old worn OEM one and runs better. Time will tell how long it will last though. Will probably convert it to the newer style as mine is the older version separate from the IAT sensor.

Its not the end of the world if it's aftermarket, but aftermarket ones are a gamble and since you're having some issues with the truck it can't hurt to rule that out at least.

Toyota uses Denso sensors on these trucks so anything other than that *might* not meet the exact specs and create issues.

I know this is a 1st gen, but I've been having very similar symptoms on my 2015 2nd gen. I've been digging through the forums and narrowed it down similar to what you listed and planning on doing another round of digging into my truck and narrow it down. Please let me know if you ever figure it out!

Just thought I'd give some more info in case it helps narrow it down. It seems to do it worse when I first start it and drive off for the day. And I have also been trying to drive a little lighter then I normal do (accelerate slower and easier ) and it seems to do it a little but less extreme but it's still present

does yours sound anything like this? I have a video in the link. You gotta listen kinda closely but I’ll get a rattle when I start accelerating.

Mine also starts making this noise once I start accelerating a little harder than usual. Idk much about 1st gens but make sure to check your catalytic converter of heat shield as well.

I have not noticed any noise, just the feeling of it sputtering and losing power during acceleration
