    Hey All,

Changing the plugs at 60k. Changing the boots/springs on the coils as well.

Which way does the spring go? One end is wide the other is narrow.

Below in the pic. The left one is "as-is" from the factory. The right is what I did with the new spring

Left - from the factory - Wide side in the boot - narrow side to spark plug

Right - my doing - Narrow side in the boot - wide side to the plug

    So which is correct?

Thanks for your help in advance

You should install it the same as it came out.
The one on the right will not give you a good connection too loose.

The image on the left is correct.

See the video at the 56 second mark. I think the vehicle is a Sequoia, but all the Toyota's that use this type coil are the same.

The spring is supposed to go over the nipple on the end of the spark plug.

@Jimmyh - You say the image on the left is correct but the video show the right....????

Also getting the spring in this way is hard - tips/tricks/videos?

Plus wouldn't you want the wider end to go over the spark plug tip.

The other way has the cross piece and is narrower....

    Did you watch the video?

The open end goes to the coil pack and should snap in place.

The wide end is too loose on a spark plug. Install it exactly the way the original one was before you disassembled it. The left side of your image you posted.

Here is a screen shot of what he took out in the video I linked:

@Jimmyh Yes I did watch the video. And that is correct how it came out - but the orange glove guy put it in backwards then....right?

Yes I watched the entire video and he reinstalled it backwards. I should have watched the entire thing. I was looking for an image to reinforce what I was saying.

The Open Wide end of the spring snaps onto the coil side. you may need to get a tool and press it on until it snaps in place.

@Jimmyh - thanks for the info. Now getting the wide side into the coil pack is the trick. I've had it bounce out twice and have spent over 30 minutes looking for it. Very frustrating.

@Jimmyh - while you're lurking here - does the rubber "collar/gasket" have to be a certain orientation. I know the flat side up towards the connector. I was meaning in the collar/gasket it has a tiny, tiny hole - does it need to be oriented a certain way or it doesn't matter...

No it doesn't matter the rotation. Flat side up towards the connector.

Read this thread earlier and was curious myself. I just got back and pulled #5. I guess my original springs aren't as centered as your new ones, but the tail of the spring was indeed towards the plug.

The tiny hole is probably just a vent. Lined mine up with the bolt.

It appears the factory spring has on end that is straight and will be pressed against the end of the spark plug, as opposed to the new spring that will grip the spark plug around it's circumference.

Video says narrow end goes into the coil.

UPDATE - I got 2 new springs in and I got 1 old spring in. I didn't pull the spring from the last one.

So keeping score - 2 with new springs and 2 with old.

The best tip i can give you - use small needle nose pliers. Grasp the spring (new or old) by the end piece that cross the middle of the spring. See pics above replies 1 or 5.

Just barely grasp it with the end. Center spring into coil and push down and twist counter clockwise. At least 10 times. Don't release even if you hear a click.

Also I did this horizontal instead of it face up on a table. You'll need to use your left thumb and fore finger to grasp the pliers (fully inserted into coil) while you spin with your right hand.

Coil packs in - test drove the truck - all is good.

Hope this helps. Thanks to all for their help.

Any questions - hit me up here.

It should go in exactly like the OEM Spring. The open end snaps onto the coil electrode.

They are a pain in the @ss!

I usually don't replace those unless they are corroded or burned for that very reason.

    Good Job

Just dealt with this problem. On my 2.7 liter, the large end of the spring winds INTO the end of the spring seat, not over it. The way my coils are made there is no way for the spring to go over the spring seat. It must be seated in it. And yes, what a pain in the arse!
