Hi all, I have a 2022 TRD Sport and would like to hide my wireless android auto device (Motorola MA1) and turn the USB port in the dash into a charger. Wanted to get some input on the feasability/safety of what I intend to do.

I plan on purchasing this step down converter and cutting the female USB A end off. Next, I plan on cutting the wire that plugs in the back of the head unit that goes to the USB receiver in the dash. Then splice the USB A end into the cut plug wire and plugging the Motorola MA1 into that and mounting it somewhere in the dash. Finally, I plan on tapping into the cigarette lighter to power the converter and then splicing the other end where the USB A receiver was cut off into USB at the dash. Would this work? Thanks in advance.

unfortunately, it won't work-- quick charge has a communication aspect that requires the 2 communication wires to get the charger and the device to-be-charged to decide at which voltage to charge at, which will definitely mess with the oem radio's usb communication methods.

Would this converter work? It's not a quick charge one.

Here’s a quick charge that I’m using and goes in factory blank . 1000000197.jpg 1000000221.jpg

Not sure that would fit my dash. Below is a picture of my dash, right now I have the Motorola MA1 taped to the dash. I'd like to hide it inside the dash. Just need to know if what I proposed in my OP would work. Not really concerned about quick charging, just want the charger to work, ideally by tapping into the cigarette lighter with the converter.

I think the 2nd converter you posted would work with your set up better than the 1st. I wouldn’t mess with splicing wires on the radio usb but you might be able to get some type of splitter and make it work.

I originally got the idea from this post; the main difference is Murphy wired the head unit wire to a lightning cable end to directly plug into his iPhone instead of wiring it to a USB A receiver like I intend to do. I think I'll give it a try. What's the worst that could happen? CtoS33NXEAAg5DR.jpg

Don't mean to jack the thread, but im looking to do the same thing essentially with adding the a few different ports to the dash. I'm gonna remove the cigarette lighters for a usb/usb-c and the other a usb/hdmi. My question is you have the port with just the red/black wires hooking up, where as the Dasaita I ordered will have two female usb ends out the back, do I have to get a male to female port to install it, or can you cut the wiring and the solder the red and black or the cut usb(I have no idea what the usb looks like cut so thats why im asking, assuming its just red/black under). Secondly for the Aux/usb port mine isnt working so figured might aswell take that out as im already there, but that wiring is totally different so wondering how to approach that. Any help would be awesome, TIA.

The red wire I ran it to a hot fuse under the dash that only came on when the truck was on . The black is a ground wire.
