I found this old thread about this topic, but no answers.

I didn't check to see how old it was so I posted a reply and got my hand slapped.

My speedometer is off by as much as 10mph, I might have a solution to this problem. As I posted on the old thread (I deleted my post from there):
Many years ago I had a '98 Dodge Dakota, it had a 3" lift and oversize tires on it. I bought a v3 Yellow Box from https://www.yellr.com/index.htm and it worked really well. I still have it the box, not the Dakota. I sent the company an email to see if it will work on my Tacoma. If it does I will let you all know how it works out after I install it.

It can adjust the speedometer down to a .25% speed offset. Mine Tacoma is a 2001, from what I understand the first couple of years used a cable before changig to a speed sensor.

Does someone know if the speedo sensor is a hall-effect type?

Haha, yeah, the threads are all dated.
    But your answer was there.

I'm not sure what your goal is, but I got my speedometer almost perfect after swapping to a speedometer gear with the correct number of teeth. It was a 10 minute job of swapping it out of the transfer case.

I just had my 02 auto 4x4 re-geared to 4.88 with my existing larger tires (255/85-16/33's) and my speedo is ~ 10mph at highway speeds. I'm going to do the 33-tooth speedometer gear swap first to see if that gets me to where I need to me. I'll be confirming with a GPS speedometer. See here for a good write up: https://adventuretaco.com/replacing-the-speedo-gear/

Note: if you order a gear, pay attention to p/n's as they differ between manual and auto transmissions. Once it arrives and I test it out, I'll report back my results. I'm hoping to try this as it seems much more simple than the Dakota option.

    I ordered the following:

    How did that go?
I run 285/75/16 with 4.88 gears. I put in a 34 gear and I'm still about 6%off. 255/85s are slightly taller (33.1 v32.8 I think) and doing a 33 tooth gear you may still be about 8%ish off.
I'm thinking about doing the 255s when I get new tires.
    Let us know.
