2005 V6 Tacoma VSS "A". I'm still trying to find it. I called the local dealership, and they couldn't really give me a solid answer as to where it is. The Parts person said that Toyota does not go by the OBD codes. But going by what he had, still said that it's located on the trans.
I told him that I replaced the ones on the trans both driver and passenger side but mentioned that there was another one located on the drive train (location exactly, unknown) then he mentioned the tires and I said I replaced all four of them. He said to keep looking on the trans.

Anyone with a more solid answer?

You need to share the code

if it’s p0500 it’s usually not as simple and replacing a sensor

If you have an automatic truck you don't have a vehicle speed sensor A, on automatic trucks the ABS module receives the vehicle speed from one of the rear speed sensors and transmits it to the Combination Meter (instrument cluster) the cluster then transmits it to the PCM and other modules that require a speed signal.

If it’s a p0500 code more than likely gonna be an instrument cluster failure. Just went through this. The speed sensors are pretty robust and generally don’t fail.

He was probably referring to the wheel speed sensors located on every wheel.

People says it's the instrument cluster but I am getting normal readings, such as: speed and Tachometer plus fuel and temp.

It rarely affects the speedometer but for some reason the cluster stops transmitting the speed signal to the PCM, see the troubleshooting chart for P0500 that I posted above.

It will affect you cruise control, it will shut off and cruise won’t work.

come to think of it. My cruise control does work on and off at times. I will trace out the circuit and see if there's a break in the line.

Just do yourself a favor and stop the parts cannon. If you have the wiring diagram and a dvom you can trace the signal from the cluster to the pcm. I did it the rudimentary way.. when the cruse was working I banged on the dash and the cruse immediately shut off, So I determined it to be a cluster fault. Got a reman from a vendor and it’s been good; no codes and cruse working normally.

I did a full writeup on the vehicle speed circuit, the P0500 code, and steps to diagnose it. See the link below.

racer1x, your comment had me cracking up. Why didn't I think of that. Just bang on the dash and see what it does. Like in the old days when the TV didn't work, just bang on the side.

I know this is a very old post. I recently started having a intermittent check engine light for the speed sensor A. I believe it is the p0500...
Sometimes it's on for a few minutes, hours, days, sometimes it's on for a few weeks.... sometimes it's off for a few minutes a few hours or even a few days or weeks.
I don't know if it was coincidence or what, but it literally happened right as I hit a large puddle of water.... had the swerve something in the road , it wasn't super deep or anything but maybe 8 to 10 in.
I've tried doing a bunch of reading and research and just wondering if this will actually make a difference in MPG. Or am I good to leave it alone for now until it turns on permanently? Also wondering if anybody actually had to have their speedometer cluster repaired and how much that cost them and how long it took. I can't imagine having to send it out somewhere and be out of my truck for a month or whatever.

Seems to be a very common issue on 05-08 trucks for the vehicle speed output of the cluster to fail, I suspect it to be cracked solder joint in the cluster but I've yet to see someone take it apart to see.
We have found a way to bypass the cluster speed output and use the speed input instead if you wish to go that route.
