I am trying to install some speakers in the front door of my 2003 Extra cab. I ordered some speaker wiring harnesses but they do not seem to be the correct ones.
Since I need to get it installed today I am just going to solder the wires from the original factory speaker wiring harness to my new speakers.

Can anyone identify which is the positive and which is the negative wire?

One wire is red and one wire is red/black.
I assume the red is positive and red/black is negative but just wanted a second opinion.

You can hook up a 9v battery to the leads. When the cone moves outward you have it wired correctly and can tell which is + or -.
Some people say this is too much voltage so use 1 or 2 AA's if you want instead for less voltage.

90% of the time the black strip indicates the negative side.

The 9volt battery trick will not work in this instance. I know which terminal is + and - on the speaker. I need to know which is + and - on the wiring harness.
The 9volt battery trick would work if I was trying to determine polarity on the speaker which I already know.
I contacted Crutchfield and they said there was not a speaker wiring harness available for my truck. I find this kind of hard to believe but Crutchfield has never let me down before.
Basically I just hooked the speaker up one way and listened to it and then hooked it up the other way and wired it up the way it sounded the best. Of course to my ears it sounded basically the same both ways.

What matters with speakers is to match the phase between the two, not to determine the absolute polarity. If you wire both speakers with the same relationship of specifically-colored wire to each terminal on both speakers, it will function as intended.

I assume you have factory speakers to remove so just check polarity of those speakers and then you’ll know what wire was ran to them from the truck harness and hook your speakers up to match

To your ears it will sound the same if both speakers are wired with the polarity as you are describing, or if both are reversed. For acoustics, your ears detect changes in pressure and are not concerned with the polarity of the pressure change. If one speaker polarity is reversed from the other, this changes the staging by modifying the interference pattern by shifting one speaker’s phase by 180 deg. The soundfield is intended to be symmetric in a car interior, so you should wire the speakers in the same phase. More advanced audio gear has adjustments to shift phase of any of the speakers to adjust staging. This is useful in venues where the sound stage is not symmetric such as is typical in autos.

Yep, polarity does not matter so long as the polarity is the same for all the speakers.

My bad! Misread the title and saw the speaker and assumed it was regarding the speaker terminal!
Looks like most everyone has suggested the correct response already.

Just a note....Metra says that the 72-8105 speaker wiring harness is supposed to fit, but it doesn't (at least not for the front speakers in my truck).

go to your local Harbor Freight and buy a cheap set of crimper/end combo, like maybe $20. if you want heatshrink and heat gun it's another $25 total. trust me, you will use these many times over and get your money's worth

the white should be the ground on the factory plug, Toyota uses a common ground wire color (white/blk stripe) thankfully

i didn't think about harbor freight having that stuff...i went to lowes, home depot...dayton ohio doesn't have the best selection lol

i have a crimper...i just need to get the right size connectors...i found 6.3 mm that corresponds to the 1/4" but the smaller one measure 1/8" but nothing seems to match up to that

You could use heatshrink as well. I've had success with that and just a cigarette lighter to seal up

use the smallest size, once it's on the tab more than likely will not come off, you can even "crimp" it a little tighter

i really am rusty at this stuff...i did just put in a kenwood cd head unit with a metra install kit...i was impressed it went as well as it did...the radio works lol

it's been 25 years since i've fooled with car audio things

    Yup my method

Aftermarket speaker has the tab on it, you just use a clip connector
