Spark plugs 2008 Taco 4.0L

So I need to replace my spark plugs since Toyota put in copper ones 30k ago. I was thinking of getting the Denso (5344) IKH20 Iridium Power, but Im also considering the Denso (4704)

I wasn't expecting that answer, why when they are worse on longevity, power and fuel efficiency??

 

Oem copper work best in the 4.0 unless it's boosted, some people have driveability issues running platinum or iridium plugs in the 4.0.
Many people run the copper plugs for 100k+ without issues but the recommended interval is 30k.

 

I've ran the NGK laser iridium's since 30k miles... just replaced them again last week at 135k miles... no issues at all. Stock 4.0

Denso Iridium plugs

$57 SK20HR11 ---- IRIDIUM PLATINUM power pack Spark Plugs -- # 3421 ----- 6 PCS NEW

SK20HR11 (#3421) gap 0.044” for my 09 and after 100k about ready for my next set just cause - never an issue.
Run in hot climate and a lot of long runs across county then slow offroad days slugging along and lots of idling to keep trans cooling flowing.

 

Two for and two against, it is a difficult decision, Denso claims they are fine for older vehicles. But I can't afford to do the job twice, so Im leaning towards the standard Denso copper which i know works.

 

Why is it a difficult decision?

Use the Denso coppers like the engine was designed for.

Copper, but I'll go 50-60,000 miles based on how mine have looked at lower mileage changes.

Thats what i plan to do, I can't risk trying the iridium and they cause problems

I have 66k on it now, I last changed them at 35k, I bought the truck in 2017 with about 34k on it for mileage.

 

To be honest I was really concerned about what plugs I put in my truck after 100K on the original and I ended up with the NGK Iridum for the gas milege. I get 19MPG highway or city. I have a 2013 4.0. I don't think what kind of plug is crucial. Just sayin

 

For me it’s Copper, because that is what is stated in the manual. I like to keep things simple.

 

Iridium is risky in a stock motor.

 

People are definitely making me question my decisions. I've been lucky I think since I've put iridium's in every Japanese vehicle I've ever owned, including my 2007 Honda Pilot that just crossed half a million miles. My experience has show the iridium's to last 2-3x longer than coppers as far as the gap is concerned after X amount of mileage. To be honest I had never heard about it being bad until this thread. I'll have to do some more reading.

 

Considering I pulled the factory copper plugs out at 200k+ on my truck, I don't think you can go wrong with them.

No codes or misfires, but it sure looked like they should have.

 

They still get covered in byproducts of combustion and need to be cleaned or replaced.

read all you want but this is where everyone heads for Toyota advice.

 

I’ll vouch for the copper plugs too. Bought the truck with 87k, changed the plugs at 150k and they were the original NGK/Denso from the factory. Wasn’t missing or running rough, just thought it may be time.

 

Looking for advice? Wait another 30k miles.
My 07 went 150,000 miles on original plugs and were only replaced then because they were replacing the O2 sensor at same time and in process of checking that saw a few misfire code on ECU but not enough to trigger a separate error code on the dash. I’m now at 225000 miles (75,000 on 2nd set of plugs) and just passed a smog check with no issues. I’ll probably wait until 90,000 on this set of plugs. Nothing wrong with doing it sooner if you got the time and money.
