Changed my spark plugs today for the first time on truck at 149k miles. Bought the truck with 1,858 miles on it. Bought from a Penske Toyota dealer. Had perfectly clean title came with extended warranty which is now ran out.
I’ve put 93 shell gasoline in it since I’ve owned it and Ive added sea foam a few times per year since owning. I also add Lucas octane boost now and then. Not saying it’s caused by anything in particular and the truck is running great but I’ve ran kd maxx 6.0 tune since 82,000 miles then recently switched to the ott tune at 141k miles. I’ve had a mention that they look rusted but the truck has always ran great. Hoping it’s nothing but additives or carbon build up. Opinions and how would I check the heads for water to see if it is rust? IMG_3592.jpgIMG_3593.jpg

That's what old plugs look like. Frankly they're about 50k overdue IMO. Were you expecting them to be cleaner?

Are you adding the seafoam to the engine oil? Why? That stuff is for old pushrod engines from the 60s/70s. The buildup on the plugs is likely from the additives.

Are you worried about water in the fuel causing rust? Water in fuel is not as big a problem as TW thinks it is..

2nd this, been tuned for 75k and had about 40k on KDMAX early versions before plug change....and the awesome Pro v9 these days. They had none of that build up. I don't just take short drives, run a catch can, and also don't use additives. I am sure I could have run the plugs longer but I like round numbers so 100k was good for me

Just a question and yes I know they were overdue and I’m glad I changed them. I put the sea foam in the gas tank every 10th or so fill up basically every 7500-10,000 miles or so I put a can of it in the tank

Not at all throwing shade at the tunes. Just stating what’s been done to the vehicle. Truck runs great and never had any issues with it just know water isn’t supposed to be in the heads or engine

Lots of things are not as bad as TW thinks it is.
I will also agree, the plugs look good. As in good for old and overdue.

Yeah, change your plugs as frequently or infrequently as you want, but following manufacturer’s suggestions for maintenance is pretty easy and is done so preventatively. How much are those plugs, worth it to save the money to run them 80k miles over suggested? My mom used to drive her Camry until the timing belt broke, and the car lasted to over 400k before it puked so it happened a couple times at least. Did it hurt the car with a zero interference engine? No. Was it smart? Fuck no

Although this Tacoma is by far my favorite vehicle I’ve owned I’ve drove Nissans until this truck my whole life and I’ve never changed a spark plug nor transmission fluid and I got well over 300k miles with both. 1997 pathfinder 338k hard miles I used to give this vehicle hell as it was my first vehicle I ever bought with my own money and I’d take it places it shouldn’t go being young and dumb trying to impress the ladies. Manifold was replaced under warranty on it. I replaced a radiator and fuel pump, changed engine oil, replaced batteries. 2010 armada 323k miles and still going. Replaced battery changed oil every 10,000 miles, Replaced a starter and replaced struts and trialing arm bushings.IMG_3599.jpg yes I’m aware of the recommended service maintenance but I stated that the plugs are good for 120k miles that I put in yesterday not that the Tacoma is supposed to run them for 120k

149K miles, that is awesome OP! This pretty much proves spark plugs last forever in modern engines. I change spark plugs just to have something to do, but that 60K limit for the Tacoma is completely random and a total joke.
