Discussion in 'Wheels & Tires' started by samg7, Aug 26, 2019.

?

Should I run the correct size highway-type tire, or the 0.5-inch smaller AT tire as a spare?

    Hello TacomaWorld,

I recently threw on some brand new DuraTracs in 255/75/R17 on my 2nd gen.

These tires are over 2 inches bigger than my stock 245/75/R16's so I am upgrading the spare.

    Here's my dilemma:

I have two tires in my garage that I can use as a spare, both brand new:

    Option 1: 255/75/R17 Wrangler SRA.
This is the correct size, but its more like a highway tire.

Option 2: 265/70/R17 Nitto Terra Grappler.
This tire is a little bit smaller, but is basically in the same class as the DuraTrac as far as tread goes.

So I am curious what choice is better... the correct size highway-type Wrangler SR-A for a spare, or the smaller Nitto Terra Grappler AT tire that will preform better if I blow a tire off road or in the snow and need to run my spare?

The difference in diameter of the two tires is 0.5 inches... would this affect anything if I had to drive 100-200 miles on it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here is a picture of the two tires for comparison.

Should have all 4 wheels match, especially the drive (rear) wheels...otherwise you are risking damage to your rear differential.

If you have to put it on, put it up front. Steering will pull though.

I vote option one, put that same size tire from your Jeep onto the Tacoma for the 100+ mile drive. It matters less that the type of tire is different, what's most important is that it's the same size.

That being said i would still make sure the 2 rear (drive) wheels have the same size/tread tire on them.

just because they are 255/75/17 doesn't mean they are exactly the same size... different manufacturers or even different models from the same manufacturer are slightly different sizes. that said, I think either would work fine in a pinch. personally I would sell the 2 tires you are choosing between and get a 5th duratrac.
