I'm thinking of mounting my spare in the bed using the existing cross member. I have a shell being built and will be building a simple sleeping platform. My idea is have the spare under the platform. Has anyone done this? I searched and came up empty.

Here's a pic from SMKYTXN's platform build for reference.

Not following what your looking to do...

You want to mount the spare to the existing cross member from the topside?

Sorry bout that. Yes, I want to mount tire inside bed using the cross member. I'm thinking about drilling a hole in the bed and using a j hook bolt with a wing nut. Something simple and easy to remove.

    Quick Paint for visual

It's doable but it will sit pretty high in the bed.

This was done with a custom crossmember so that it will sit lower.

Meh. If I needed a truck to haul shit I'd buy a truck that actually has a bed. These 5 footers are practically useless.

This is more fun anyway :D

I use my Toy for sand, snow, mud, rocks, etc. Last time out at the dunes it started raining real hard and it ruined all the fun for the guys in the sand rails, dirt bikes, ATV's and side by sides, but not me. I just rolled up my windows and had the dunes all to myself. Out in the snow, just turn the heater on. In the hot rocks of Moab, just turn the AC on. I love doing all that in my Tacoma.

If I need to haul something and it doesn't fit in the little bit of bed space I have left, I'll just get a trailer. When I moved recently I had so much shit I had to rent a 6x12 ft Uhaul anyway and filled it up twice.

I was going to rebuild the crossmember to dip the tire flat into the bed like the pic I posted above, but my 33" tire wasn't going to clear the axle at full stuff (I'm running an SUA kit now so I have 3-4" extra up travel over an SOA setup). I'm guessing that is part of the reason why the guy ditched the tailgate. It gave him room to push the tire far enough back to give the axle room for full stuff.
