What do you guys carry for spares? Am I overkill? This is what I carry. Most are good used parts that I've swapped out for preventive maintenance.

    Spare accessory belts (3)
2 lower ball joints (side specific)
    1 upper ball joint (universal)
    1 CV axle (universal)
    2 front brake lines
    2' length of transmission hose
1 ignition cable (the longest one)
    1 ignition coil
2 tie rod ends (side specific)

Tools to swap out the above.

That's a pretty good list, what size tires are you running and what kind of trails do you run?

In my case I'm on 35s with a front locker and the only thing I'd add to your list is another CV and a PS pump

That's not a bad list at all. I would add a length of fuel line, hose clamps, and a bolt that fits inside the fuel line. Few different uses - obviously to patch a hard fuel line.. but could also be used to patch a brake line in a pinch. The bolt inside the fuel line can act as a stopper of sorts as well. I once had a brake shoe "jump" the wheel cylinder and damage it while on the trail. I simply disconnected the rear brake line, and connected it to a short length of fuel hose, stopped with the bolt and hose clamped the hell outta it. Perfect solution to get off the trail and back to the garage for a proper fix.

I'm running 255/85-16's. Usually run single black diamond rated trails at the most, along with higher speed desert stuff. The CV i sometimes leave at home because it's big and heavy. With manual hubs, I can unlock the hub if the CV breaks and go home in 3wd.

it’s not a good idea to use 4wd with one hub unlocked - the hub with no load will just spin. Unless you have a front locker I guess.

    this ^^

have been in a couple situations where having extra coolant and brake fluid was the difference between leaving a truck behind and being able to get it to the trailhead.

Good shoes in case you have to hike out, some extra water/emergency supplies if going remote.

hah! I've actually thought about carrying my mtn bike with me in case I needed to get back out. I can ride a long way with it. Extra water and food is always a given.

I just had to throw it out there because I've been on group runs where there's always that one person that shows up wearing flip flops for winter/mountain trail run...like wtf do you plan on doing if you break down lol

Its good you're thinking about spare parts and tools, a lot of people don't and end up having to make an SOS call or rely on others that came prepared.

Aside from a few sport-specific shoes (climbing, off shore sailing, etc...), I only own rainbow sandals... :anonymous:
