Most hydrants around here are what are called "dry barrel" hydrants. Where the valve that physically controlls the water flow is beneath ground. They do this to mitigate freezing. The hydrants you see in movies that spray water 50' in the air are what is called " wet barrel " hydrants. Usually found in warmer climates, the physical hydrant body is full of water.

I bet money when the FD came to tighten it up they ruined the seal trying to over tighten it and then the water dept. eneded up having to replace it. :annoyed:

It was originally leaking at 1. So I'm guessing this was a wet barrel. I'm thinking they cranked on it. It broke something about 4ft down where the main line meets the line coming up. So then water started coming up at 2. That's why the water dept had to bring in a little digger. Even had to call the people that mark gas and power wires before digging. It was a whole thing. Lol
The water department wasn't happy with the fire department. Lol

So even flush hydrants like that one are dry barrel. The seal fails at the bottom of the stem and allows water to enter the body and leak through the cap. You have two options. Crank down on it more or rip it out and replace it. Option 1 usually ends up turning into option 2.

I did the same a few years ago. Was torn about getting a front locker but decided against it. Best mod so far for sure.
