Something hit the underside of my truck in high water.

Alas, this is not the kind of high water driving I'd like to be doing. This was some urban high water driving courtesy of some torrential rain we've been having down here in Houston.

Anyway, I was driving down a normal town street, in about a foot of water, maybe a bit more. I heard a loud sound, similar to the sound you hear when small flying rocks hit the underside of the truck. I had my hand on the shift knob when it happened and could feel it, like it was something hitting the transmission. Given that there was a ton of water and this was a normal street, it wasn't likely to be flying debris. I wondered if it could have been gears slipping or something. Is there anything up under there that water alone could have hit and caused that kind of sound and sensation?

 

Manhole cover blowout while you were driving over? Who knows? Did you look under the truck afterwards to see if there was any damage?

No - definitely wasn't that. The sound wasn't that big. It just sounded like rocks - a real sharp kind of sound, and I felt the impacts in the shift knob, but nothing as big as a manhole cover. I did look underneath and there's no visible damage, which made me wonder about something internal to the transmission brought on by the high water.

 

I mean - I am a rather fine specimen but I don't need a mirror to tell me that.

(Yes - I looked. Didn't see anything.)

 

We are pretty close to the coast, so...

 

The water we have now in Huntsville is slowly receding, but I'm sure you know we both have more rain on the way throughout the weekend. Schools were closed here yesterday and today.

EDIT: It's raining like a SOB now...

In the future, please test the water before driving in. I can guarantee you the water you drove into was hard water. Next time, try some soft water. I have been driving in feet deep water for over 38 years now and i always check to make sure the water is soft and not hard.

 

I suspect the ABS / VSC modulator fired up momentarily due to some wheel speeds or wheel speed signals being wonky.

It may just have been some kid's toy that washed away. Now ruined and runned over.
