    New to the forum.

Started my 2022 Tacoma TRD Sport with automatic transmission (26k miles) this morning and noticed the check engine light was on. The vehicle alert on the message center stated:

"A malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission has been detected. Contact your Toyota dealer in order to have your vehicle inspected." (I am assuming this is a generic message)

Anyways, I backed out of my driveway, put the truck in drive and as soon as it shifted it SLAMMED into gear. The next shift SLAMMED into gear. Upshifting was smooth, but any downshift, especially at speeds below 25 mph was extremely hard. I tried going highway speeds and it wouldn't downshift at all. I don't know what gear it was in, but my guess is it would not downshift any further than 4th gear. I took it straight to the dealership and I am waiting to hear back from them.

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Sorry no useful input, but re-read to confirm it must be an automatic transmission since you said in drive and not in gear, also can’t think if a way a manual would do this without operator error… reports like this make me feel better about getting the manual transmission

@AZGOLD We haven’t had any complaints about our 2022 Tacoma other than this transmission issue. I dropped it off at our Toyota Dealership on Friday morning at 7am and they didn’t have the capacity to work on it. They won’t get to it until Monday.

Nah, i guess you could have put automatic or at in the title, but sorry you’re getting less thn legendarily consistently reliable operation. If any consolation there’s always a few serious sounding problems with a few examples of any vehicle if you look around forums enough. Hope it gets fully fixed correctly under warranty

POST UPDATE: The dealership called and stated that it was throwing a knock sensor code. They found a mouse nest and wires that were chewed through near the intake manifold. They ordered a new harness and are hoping that was the only damage. Once they have the harness swapped out, they will test drive it and make sure the transmission is not shifting hard.

I have never had something like this happen. No, we don’t park the truck in a barn or something crazy. From the video the dealership sent me, it looks like the nest was between the manifold and the right hand side cylinder head. They will send me pictures in the next few days to document the damage. (For our insurance company) I will post them as soon as I receive them.

who did they say is responsible for the repairs?
Rodent damage isn't something I would think the Toyota warranty would cover, and some harness replacements can be very expensive, needing insurance claims.

@Chew our insurance (Progressive) covers it. They could find more damage once they take it apart, but so far we are at $965. It could end up being more, depending on what they find once they dig into it more.

Glad to hear you found the problem. Owners here are always so fast at blaming the truck then finding out it is not the truck it was something else. just saying

Forget rust preventative coating anymore, the rodents are our worst enemy. We have to coat our truck engine bays with rat poison slurry each year.
