Seems to be a rather common issue on these trucks - either visible or audible chatter (or both) from the wipers as they sweep across. Has anyone ever found a good solution for this?

At $40 a set minimum Im tired of buying new blades every 9-10 months. Ive tried a few different brands over the years. Bosch Icon beam style seem to do better than the older steel beam style RainX, but still start to chatter sooner than they should.

Ive looked into the wiper mechanism under the cowl, all seems tight. But not sure that Im looking for tbh. Ive also seen a video where some guy used two adj wrenches to slightly tweak the hook end of the wiper arms. Supposedly this makes the rubber insert to sit more parallel to the glass.. I cant say that helped a ton. A year later mine are starting to chatter pretty bad.

Would love to hear any first hand solutions you guys have tried over the years.

I also got tired of buying new blades. The trick for me is wiping the blades down with silicon from silicon spray once every few months. It not only stops the chatter, it also keeps your blades lasting much longer. I’m on my third year with the same blades.

I've found OEM wiper blades work best for me. I keep the same frame and replace the insert when worn.

I think there are a lot of variables - UV, ozone, etc.

Since I’ve been parking the 2nd gen in the garage I haven’t put a new set of wipers on since I got it over 2 years ago. No chatter.

Bosch icon, like I used on my 1st gen for many years. I did have chattering on the 1st gen which was street parked and the wipers lasted an average of 9 months.

Spray your windshield with Rain-X. Also lightly run 2000 grit sand paper on the edge of your blades.

Probably something on the windshield side. I’d find the strongest windshield cleaner you can and get it sparkling clean.

Interesting. Super easy, Ill definitely give that a shot
I dont have a garage, so park outside for sure. But Im also in Maine, not a ton of UV here on the grand scale. Seems like I should be able to get more than 9-10 months out of a set..
Huh, never heard of using sandpaper on wipers. Ill have to try that if the silicone spray is a bust. Not sure if I mentioned it in the OP, but I always use the RainX washer fluid

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Clean window using squeegee. Wearing a rubber glove shake rain x and apply directly onto glass and with rubber glove dry onto glass. Allow 5 minutes to fully dry. Lightly buff with damp cloth followed immediately buffing very lightly with a dry cloth. Allow to cure without getting wet for 12 hours. Good luck and Happy New Year you crazy animals! Edit: Next we’ll discuss anti-fog treatments.

Try polishing your windshield with a glass polish. You probably have contamination build-up on the glass. Then apply a coat of rain-x on your glass and wipe your wiper blades with some. It'll be super smooth.

Avoid RainX, in the short term it looks cool because the water beads off but in the long term it dries out the rubber on the blades and makes it less pliable

And yes, gently bending the wiper arm hook to sit perpendicular against the glass can help. The arm slowly gets tweaked over time

Clean the windshield regularly with glass cleaner

I got away from the single beam style and went back to the oem brand NWB

I find a couple small things help a lot.

Wiping the blades every now and then with alcohol wipes to remove small dirt/debris. This keeps the edge clean and then wipe with a silicone spray.

Clean & smooth windshield treated with Rain-X or spray wax.

I get 2 yrs out of a set of the Toyota Sightline blades doing this.

Stupid question- Are you replacing wipers with the correct size?

I was always replacing the wiper blades on my wife's highlander as they would start to chatter after ~6 months. I didn't realize that the wiper blades on her car were different sizes for driver and passenger side (22" & 19"). I was replacing both sides with the same side blade (22"). After I realized my mistake & replaced the passenger side blade with the correct size the problem more or less went away.

Tacoma blades are 22 & 21 inches. maybe your replacing with the wrong size?

Good observation. I “upgraded” my first gen wipers from 19/17 to 21/19 (or similar). Didn’t have chattering from that, but it’s a different size and shaped windshield.

This. I tried the aftermarket blades and none of them work as well or last as long as the OEM Wipers. In my experience anyway.

I've found clay baring the windshield and waxing seems to help keep my blades from chattering as much.

Heard it so many times... Rain-X will cause chatter.

I have not proved nor disproved it myself, others around me say they have.
I used RainClear for ten years or more (before Rain-X was on the market). It worked wonders! But no longer available.

Get a piece of terrycloth wash rag. Apply Rain-X with it. Set it aside for a couple (?) weeks... it will deteriorate in your hands when you pick it up. Powder. (Of course, that may have been cheap ass chinesium terry cloth and not the Rain-X, just never know anymore.)

I use OEM wiper blade inserts (refills). Second set in 7 years. $6 each at dealership. First pair tore (at 5 yrs old) not worn out. They never have chattered.

Suppose its plausible RainX could attack rubber moreso than regular ol methanol. But Im not willing to give up the visibility of RainX

    Yes 21 and 22
