I have decided that the best type of cover for my Taco is the fully soft cover. You know, just the vinyl cover.

I'm not sure about install though, and how much (if any) of the bed rail functionality is lost due to mounting methods. Can anyone enlighten me?

I do use my bed a lot, and am constantly moving the bed cleats around for strapping the various items. That said, I'm worried the mounting hardware will interfere.

I am also wanting to start using a bed divider, which will also require the bed rails.

So, are there covers that don't use the bed rail system, and if so... how do they mount?

Show me/tell me what ya got....and how it mounts up.

Also, I have questions about the quality of the various brands.

I have the OEM vinyl soft cover and use the bed divider. It uses the bed rails to install but they are still fully functional. It’s easy to remove and reinstall and generally keeps stuff dry. Biggest downside is soft covers are not the most secure option.

I have a Truxedo Truxport and a SideRide bike mount.
    Neither take up too much space and the cleats can still be positioned pretty much anywhere you’ll need. Some pics for ya;

@philth On that middle pic... it looks like there is a corner piece that attaches a side rail to one at the front of the bed. My Tacoma did not come with a rail up front.

Is that front rail necessary & included with the Truxedo?

Third rail doesn’t come on the 3rd gen - you can pull ‘em off of 2nd gens [scrapyard] or get the rail from a dealer. I got it for added versatility + the bike mount needs it.
The Truxport doesn’t need the third rail. It mounts only on the side rails with three clamps on each side. I really like the cover for my needs, but as stated by someone earlier, the soft top roll-ups are not secure at all.
    Hope that helps!

Thanks! Bed security isn't a concern for me, which is one reason I decided a soft vinyl is sufficient for me.

How is the cover attached at the front of the bed then? Stick on velcro strip or something? Certainly something has to keep it secured and 'down' up front, to keep it from catching wind.

You open the front bed lip and it will attach up there

love my truxedo. We had rain and it was completely dry inside

here on my 2021 LB OR

only thing is after I close the bed, it takes a lot of effort to “close the tonnea” like a trunk at the end

Well, it's taken me a few months but I ordered a TruXedo TruXport, from a local dealer, today. He will have it available for me tomorrow.

I bought the Truxport and installed it today, seems like a quality product. Easy install, tight fitment. I did notice a "wind echo" sound above 45 mph. Looks great on my truck.20210619_142729.jpg 20210619_132652.jpg 20210619_143210.jpg

I’ve got a Truxedo, I’ve really enjoyed it. Don’t make the mistake I made, though. When installing, make sure you follow the instructions to take off the bed part by the rear window when installing the foam. If you don’t, it won’t be as waterproof.

I forgot that part until after the install but took it back off and added the pads.

I'm happy with mine so far. I added the OEM Tailgate remote lock & a cargo divider as well, to keep things accessible at the tailgate without having to 'fish' for them or remove the cover in case they move forward in the bed. It has only been a couple of tanks, but it appears as though MPG has improved. Set a new record at fill-up today (22.2 MPG). With that, & keeping things dry and unseen, I'm quite pleased.20210611_143445_LI (2).jpg
