I opened this can of worms for myself about 3yrs back and have just been reading/researching things here and there about it. Not planning on doing the swap just yet still gotta think on it but I'm curious what people know/think about this swap so decided I'd try starting a thread for it on here. I'm aware theres tdi and mercedes swaps as well so if others who have done these swaps want to weigh in their opinion letter rip.

Based off what I've read its quite appealing when compared to the V6 when wanting to keep similar (or more) HP and much better torque. My truck has the A750F transmission which would be getting pushed to its limits if depending on which M57 I went with (heard it can handle max 550NM/405ft/lbs - correct me if I'm wrong) which then would lead to a manual transmission swap or just finding a lower output engine on my end. Obviously there is alot to be done to make this swap happen but haven't seen any posts about it on here just seen the Aussie forums chatting about it mostly and I cant be the only one on here considering this swap.

So is there anyone else looking into this swap? What are peoples thoughts here?

    Looked into it, found nothing.
I would love to have the m57 or better yet the b58 as an engine swap option but i don’t think anyone has a bmw engine in a tacoma or is in the process of doing it from what I’ve found.
Modern BMW engines have so many pointless sensors and nonsense on them that i think that alone keeps people from trying to swap them into other cars

I was driving along side a x5 with a diesel and AWD badges on it, would be nice to find a crashed one and put an atlas transfer case on in place of the stock transfer case before throwing it in a Tacoma

The 3L TDI from a VW Touareg or Porsche Cayenne would be another great swap. I know there are some TDI adapters available for the smaller engines but I haven't seen anything for the 3L

M57 is a beast, Don't think I've ever seen anyone do that swap but I'd be all for helping them out

Oh its a beautiful beast, its too bad the N57 has its timing chain on the back dunno who thought that was a good idea lol. I've been looking into it pretty heavily and like the weight of it is basically the same or lighter depending on which block you go with, cant see nothing but pros to the swap. Pair it up with the ZF 8HP and you're laughing

I've been looking for the right excuse to swap to Haltech and toss a turbo on my land cruiser and now that there is a bellhousing from 1FZ-FE to 8HP75 I'm thinking it's nearing the time.

Yeah I just seen that adapter kit for the 1gr-fe, honestly wouldn't be a bad start for the swap and migrate to the m57 slowly. Will still need an adapter plate for the M57 + 8hp for that pair up, but this swap is gaining popularity so I wouldn't be surprised if more info/parts start coming out over the coming year too. I certainly see the truck sitting on blocks for this at some point in the future here, engine is in the 350k ballpark so got some time left still to get funds and parts ready.

There is a trans adapter for diesel turbo BMW i6.

one would probably mate it to a manual and have a Tacoma that is already manual.

it’s simple. You either do it or don’t.
I did not. I do not have an extra $10k sitting around to upgrade my truck.

sounds like you do. Nice. Let us know how it goes.

    Why M57 over OM606?

The M57 is a bit shorter, and has beefier connecting rods.
Otherwise, mechanical pump on an OM606 seems better to me.
