Just bounced around on the back of the truck. It came loose. Didn't even notice it until it hit the window.

They hate somebody over here worse, friend of mine bought a Rav-4 from me, got drunk and crashed into a tree, walked away from it without a scratch and managed to avoid the cops. Bought another one a month later and did the exact same thing again, same result. Over 60k in claims in a 2-3 month period. I told him no more cars. He uses uber now thankfully.

I'm just glad to hear it wasn't the OEM bed cover, I don't want mine slamming around like that. What kind of road were you on?

Yeah sounds like the new one should be on Toyota, improperly installed caused the problem. Let Toyota's insurance pay for it..... no brainer... why are you even fucking around with it. Take it to the dealership tell them how the window got broken.... its a 4x4 yer allowed to go wheeling. Shit falls off cause it wasn't installed properly isn't the driver/owners fault.

What if it was a wheel that fell off... would the damage be your fault?? Absolutely not... Be nice about it but be firm... it's not on the dealer that you take it too, it will be paid for by Toyota.

And sorry for the mishap .... no one got hurt thankfully... you could ask the dealer "what if the cover came thru the window and hit my child's head?". As soon as you mention children and safety in the same sentence, to the service mgr... then ask to talk with the "manager" ... that should get things taken care of.

Your gonna have a hard time getting that covered under warranty. Toyota isn't in the business of losing money, whether it was secured properly after delivery or not, burden of proof lies on you and you did sign for the truck when you took delivery. That's like saying one tire was 2 PSI low which caused my flat off road, Toyota should be responsible. Sucks OP but either insurance or out of pocket, I EXTREMELY DOUBT you can claim this under warranty.

Lift kit, weight distribution hitch. Camper shell. Kayak Rack.
Yeah this is one of those finnicky things. On one hand you have insurance, on another you have dealership, on another you have other alternatives.

Thing is... toppers, camper shells, tonneau covers etc were never really designed for offroading. I remember when I had a shell put on my then 08 tacoma 4x4... that was the FIRST thing they told me... that it was not designed for off road use. Now that I have my 16 4x4 I am sure they will tell me same thing again on saturday when I will have it installed.

There is really nothing in there that would hold it tight. Whether you use a c clamp or a bed rail clamp... I think unless it is welded/bolted on and or has one of those "through the shell" roll bar things...

Right now best thing you can do is tape off the window. You do not want moisture and bugs and stuff getting in. If you do not have a crashed 2016+ on your local junkyard you can probably call glass companies like safeglass. Insurance companies do not like when you "off road"... not one bit so they should not know how you broke the window, rather that you broke a window.

Does the OP have a "Tacoma" cover... or was it an aftermarket one installed by the dealership??

If it's the OEM cover its covered under warranty. So should the window be covered for not being installed properly.

Even if its the OEM cover that dosent mean its covered under warranty, the cover would be covered if it broke, but it sounds like it came loose and broke his window, if that's the case Toyota wouldn't be responsible, you'd have to prove it was installed improperly which will be hard to do. They aren't responsible for everything you do with/to your cover and truck. Sh*t happens, certainly sucks.

I hear what you're saying, but I'd argue that a bed cover that comes loose and smacks into the window is defective. The trouble though would be a he-said/she-said as to whether the latch was engaged.

I'm assuming it was folded up, as if it was flat there are five latches holding it in place that would all have to fail.

Exactly you broke your cover, not your cover coming loose and breaking the window. And willing to bet your cover piece was a bit less than a piece of glass. He may have a cool service writer that will hook him up, may not, point is this isn't really a warranty item unless it was a defect of the cover that caused the damage or as alluded to installed improperly. If it wasn't defective or installed wrong you cant really blame Toyota...

Exactly. Gotta prove it was installed incorrectly, or that its defective, otherwise its not truly warranty issue. But if you have a good relationship with your service writer may be able to get it written that way.
