Just changed my oil and filter today. Ran it with the cap off while I was adding the last bit of oil. There is a lot of air coming out. Like, it's making a whistling noise through the fill hole. So the question that follows is...is this normal? Clogged PCV? How much blowby is too much? I also have some weeping around the fill cap, but not any amount that has caused concern in the past.

That's not blowby dude, if you run any engine with the cap off you're gonna have air coming out the top and splashing oil all over.

No there is no oil blowing everywhere, that's not how it works.

https://www.yourmechanic.com/questi...w by is when, rings, into the engine crankcase.

It's crankcase pressure...either due to combustion gasses getting by the rings (blowby) or normal operating conditions. I've ran engines with the cap off before, never seen one with this much pressure. Usually it's barely noticeable.

Sounds like typical windage from the pistons moving up and down. The pistons will move air on the top and bottom side.

Primary reason for a crankcase breather.

Suggest to check your PCV for proper function......shoot, just replace the PCV. Its a very inexpensive part even from Toyota.

And put the cap back on.

I actually like to drive around without the cap on, saves weight, in both oil and the cap itself

Yeah I'm gonna replace the PCV it's got 160k on it

    160K?????

You should consider pulling basic maintenance a bit more often.

Just got the truck with 135k on it a 5 years ago. Don’t worry I stay on top of my fluids, brakes, and suspension intervals. PCV has been on my to do for a bit, but life is busy

Suggest for you to run through the 100 kmile maintenance schedule. That will essentially Zero the interval.

After, follow the scheduled maintenance intervals.

Don't worry about the extraneous crap like wheels, suspension, cosmetics, audio until you get onto a firm schedule. Yes, I know, maintenance ain't very cool or sexy or bro-like........ But it will help assure the truck is running at peak.

    Goldentaco’s college budget build

Only thing missing from this list is a radiator flush, which I did around 135-140k, have to look back. Am I missing anything? This forum keeps me pretty on top of my shit. Truck is gonna rust out before the engine dies without a doubt. Even with the new frame and woolwax, which I will now be applying every year.

air filter, clean MAF, clean Throttle Body, serpentine belt system, flush brake lines, power steering fluid change..........

YOU need to check the schedule for your truck. I can only suggest.

Sounds like excessive blowby. Check your PCV.

If the PCV is good then I would do a compression and/or leakdown test.

Ah yeah those are all done already. Brakes have been flushed several times, and everything replaced aside from hard lines. TB and MAF cleaned at 135k by a mechanic. Alternator belt replaced, others we're okay but I adjusted tension. PS fluid was flushed when the rack was replaced by a mechanic at 130k. I clean the air filter about once a year or every 10k miles, it's an AFE dry filter. Truck stays happy as long as fluids are fresh, some random issues pop up here and there, but it's a solid truck.

Anyways I am going to replace the PCV because this is way more crankcase pressure than I've ever seen. We'll see if that changes anything.

    New Engine to much.

200,000 miles not much your going to do unless you rebuild the engine.

How much you put up with is up to you.

I am slacking on the PCV myself it sits on the timing belt overdue 150,000 miles.

After playing around in the diesel world I don't think adding boost is a good way to make up for blowby but it would be a fun experiment :)

It would turn into a perpetual motion machine, use blow by to create more blow by and then send that blow by back into the engine to create more blow by
