I'm about to buy some chains for my truck. I have 10-ply tires, and one site had a special set of chains for 10-ply or tires with deeper lugs. These things don't fit tight enough for it to matter, right?

Unless you're truck is lifted you may have problems making chains fit. Especially with E rated tires. At any rate it is going to be a close fit.

I bought these in the 5.5mm size.

    https://www.tirechain.com/Tire-Chains-Square-Alloy.htm

They work a little better in close fit applications, yet are still mud rated. I can't make them work on the front.

Your chains need to fit TIGHT against the tire, or you'll get body damage.

    On my Tacoma

You are not suppose to put chains on the front anyway.

I have the OME 2-2.5 inch lift. And was only planning to have one set for the rear.

Are cables or chains better for our trucks?

Who said you're not suppose too? I run all around chain while in 4wd for better steering and control....

More people have issues than not, speed sensor wires and clearance issues with bigger tires.

I could see chaining up all 4 tires to get out of a bad spot. But not going down the highway

It also depends on if you're running the huge chainlink chains or a higher quality, better fitting set of tire chains.

I run the Laclede Alpine Sport Tire Chains (#2326). Originally bought for LT265/75R16 but fit my current LT255/75R17's.

I would not run these in an off-road situation where I would be flexing out the rear axle as it would most likely rip off my untrimmed fender flares.

You can find these Laclede Alpine Sport Tire Chains on eBay like new for under $50. Definitely worth it.

The load rating of the tire makes zero difference. Lift kits make zero difference.

Chains have to match the size of the tire and that’s it. Cable chains have a lower profile and are a better choice for the front axle of the Tacoma due to clearance issues with the control arms and disc brakes.

Honestly dude 99% of the advice you give on this site is delivered with confidence yet is wrong wrong wrong.

I would go with chains. I don't know how well effective the cables can be.

I would rather have a vasectomy than put chains on, last set I had was cables on my old Chevelle work rig.

Gonna be hard to walk home after that vasectomy when you get stuck in the snow!

    Lol.

Ill just toss my $0.02 in here and say it depends a lot on what you're going to be doing with them. For on road use like in the Rockies or whatever Id think going with something smaller like a set of diamond chains, or even a set of cable chains would be ideal. (Full disclosure Ive never run chains on road here in New England...) But if you plan on having these as backup for deep snow and offroad then yeah, Id grab some full on ladder style chains.

And yes, chains are based on tire size, not much else really matters

I do a lot of exploring, scouting, and hunting, am almost always by myself, and often go on non-maintained forest roads that have rutted out and started to slope downhill. I want the chains to get out if I get up there and have some snow or ice hit. I ended up buying two sets. One will be a backup in case the first set breaks or if I need to put them on the front to get out of a major jam.

Ahh ok. Get some traction boards as well if you dont already have them. I use them more often in the snow than all the other methods combined.
