So im in the middle of doing a timing belt replacement and oil pump resealing. When installing the oil pump I snapped one of the long bolts that goes thru the pump. FSM has two torque values for bolt A and bolt B at 31 foot lbs. My gut instinct told me that's WAY too tight, but I followed it by incrementally increasing the torque to spec. One bolt snapped into the block at 25 ftlbs. Ill have to use an extractor to remove it.

Possible FSM misprint? Its both in the 2003 tacoma and the 2000 4runner FSM.

Yup I usually get scared at 30ft lbs for the 12mm bolts. I’ve broken and stripped many bolts in my life.

the problem is fatigue in the metal and margin of error with torque wrenches.

I don’t trust my Mac 3/8 anymore right now and waiting on calibration.

lately I’ve been using and 1/4 ratchet and feel.

Yep should have trusted my gut instinct. Had them at 15ft lbs and just pondered should i go tighter per fsm.

The thing is only the Toyota Dealers get the FSM corrections and updates

FWIW, I just looked them both up in TIS and still the same whacked torque spec with no correction (tacoma shows the same as well).

Not cool. Sucks to have it snap off in the block.

Ill get the bolt out with a left handed drill bit. Question is what torque should I use? for a 12mm bolt it shouldn't be more than 15ft lbs like the water pump just above it. I should buy new bolts as these are probably stretched to hell.

Does TIS get the updates ?

I wonder had the OP inspected and cleaned the bolts ? Then the holes in the block.

If I have any doubt the bolts get tossed in the scrap

Op you need to trust your spidey sense the more you use it the stronger it gets.

I have learned not to ignore mine it results in stuff going wrong.

Bolts were cleaned with a wire wheel and used brake clean to remove the rest of the gunk. Holes were picked with a pick set. I don't like putting parts back dirty.

Simply too much torque on those 12mm bolts. I remember reading back on a 4runner forum where the same thing happened to another guy and Toyota misprint torque specs between bolt A and bolt B. Cant find the thread though...

With a subscription you have access to all current TSBs along with everything else - for all models/years... so yeah, its updated. I'm going to guess they just choose not to update all the 'old' stuff. After all, we're 20+ years now.

One of the reasons I never use a torque wrench but for the head bolts rods and mains and others with very high torque .

    Never had any issues .

Another good Toyota FSM mistake was the 22 R series engine family head bolts at 55 Foot pounds should have been 65 foot pounds.

Fill the cooling system the coolant came pouring out.

Got the bolt out! Used a left handed drill bit but that didn't work. Then I used a torx bit and hammered into the hole I drilled out and came out with ease, Much better than a ez-out.

As for the Bolts I'm very certain that Toyota flipped the torque values between bolt A that is 14mm and bolts B that is 12mm. Now im gonna be set back for a week before I get this running as these bolts are now stretched and will buy new ones.

    Toyota uses JIS specs.
You could look at the head marking, and bolt diameter, and use the chart.
Also, bolt diameter and head size are 2 totally different things. Don’t confuse this when using the chart.

This is why I filled a bolt bin with JIS hardware so very nice to walk to the bin and get the bolts you need.

Saves me hours hunting for dropped hardware with my fumble fingers it happens often.

Glad to see it came out without a major battle!
