If I want to smoke test my Tacoma (I borrowed a smoke machine from a friend) to see if there are any vacuum leaks, where would be the best place to put the smoke into the system? Right after the MAF sensor? I assume I should also test the exhaust system by putting smoke into the tailpipe - to see if there are leaks around the O2 sensors, right?

I'm asking because on other vehicles, I've heard of putting the smoke in various locations, like into the brake booster vacuum hose.

    Vehicle info:
    2014 Tacoma, base model
    2.7L 4-cylinder
    5-speed manual

Just curious - what makes you want to do a smoke test - my 08 is the same as yours and I never did it . Thanks for any reply.

I'm trying to smooth out some idle shakiness. Might not be a vacuum leak, but I figure it's one test that I can do without spending any money since I already have the necessary tools.

You can put it in any vacuum line that goes directly to the intake manifold but you will need to block off the intake hose to the air filter.
My method typically was to place a plastic bag over the throttle body and push the itake hose over it to block it off although I bought the dedicated tool for it recently.

Thanks for the suggestion for blocking off the intake to the air filter with a bag.
So looking at this diagram, a few places where it seems easy to put the smoke would be where it says "evap to intake", "evap from canister", or "brake booster vacuum hose (to intake)", all in the direction that the arrows are going, right?

Follow-up question: are there any sensors that I need to clean off after I do a smoke test? Since the smoke won't reach the MAF sensor, I don't need to worry about that one. But are there others that I shouldn't leave a residue on? I'm using mineral oil which I believe shouldn't damage most sensors, but I figured I should ask anyway just to be safe.

The easiest would probably be the brake booster hose or the evap line to the intake.

I wouldn't worry about that, the intake normally has oil and gas vapors in it all the time.

Oh, yeah, I didn't think about that - the air coming from the PCV has oil in it anyway. Thanks.
