After spending 1 night in my new tent I can say (and my girlfriend wont stop saying) how uncomfortable the supplied mattress is.
I wanted to added a topper to it.
I figured just a standard Full size topper and if i have to trim a bit around the area where the bars are i will.
I am wondering for those who have added a topper.....

Did you remove the original mattress?
Add the topper to the original mattress?
in either case what thickness? 1.5", 2", 3"?

I am wondering what works best to actually close the tent.
    Thanks

I have a Tepui tent, but I think they all have the same basic 2.5" memory foam mattress.

I just did this a few months ago. Found a cheap queen-sized topper (2" memory foam, I think) on Amazon and cut it to fit. I just stuck it under the existing mattress. It's not *perfect* but it feels 100x better. It's a little harder to close the tent than it used to be, and I can't keep nearly as much bedding up there as before (I used to be able to fold 2 sleeping bags and a couple pillows, but now it's just the pillows), but overall I'm happy with the update.

Definitely following this one. I'm trying to get my wife into camping more and comfort is definitely key! These rooftop tents are freaking sick!

There must be a couple little pieces of gravel under your mattress, but it’s all relative I guess. Ours is very comfortable.

I added a 2 inch topper to mine. Any thicker then I think you will have trouble with it folding correctly. My wife sewed two sheets together and we slid the topper inside. Much better with the added cushion.

I know a lot of the RTT manufacturers offer a thicker mattress upgrade... In my case, the Tepui wanted something like $200+ for it, and a topper was only $35 on Amazon. So it's a cheap experiment. Worked well enough for me -- I haven't had to cough up the dough for the new mattress.

Got a memory foam 3” topper and I shoved it inside with the other mattress. It gets tight closing it up now but I sleep like I’m at home now

Most people use a double/full size topper or cut down a queen?

I like to use regular sheets but obviously no one makes any that fit.

Would like to add some sort of topper to my 55x95” mattress.

My friend and I went out and got 2” memory foam toppers (full) from Ikea that we have been using. Fits pretty well. You can look up the exact dimensions on their website. I believe it cost $89. We wanted something decent that we could feel before we bought it and one that came in a cover not just bare memory foam.

I have the smittybilt overlander xt and my biggest complaint with the mattress is that I can feel the floor through it. I haven’t done it yet, but I’m going to pick up some inexpensive closed cell sleeping pads from the mil surplus and slip them inside the cover under the mattres. A plus to this is I can still leave my bedding up there. Two down comforters and four pillows. I like a firmer mattress than most people though.

Thinking about doing this with a fitted full sheet and comforter. Walmart has them cheap also.

I cut down a queen. Because of the dimensions of the tent, I'm short on the length by several inches (as I recall), but it's not all that noticeable (my tent is 96x48, and a queen topper is ~80-ish x 60-ish). I put the small gap at the entrance of the tent.

Again, I didn't want to spend $100 on a nice topper since a new thicker mattress is about $200. I capped my budget at $50 otherwise it wasn't worth it. My point was to do it on the cheap because the mattresses are overpriced... I can't make a mattress as nice as the factory ones, so if my cost ever approached theirs, I'd just say screw it and buy the real one.
