Smallest/lightest spare size to go with my 285/70/17 KO2s?

I've got KO2 P285/70/17 33" tires all around, and have a full size spare mounted on my Mobtown rear single swing out bumper.

I have decided to remove my swingout for every day driving, and only mount spare tire/gas cans for long trips and wheeling.

I'd like to mount a spare 'donut' tire in the stock location. I don't have the original spare that came with the truck. My question is, what is the smallest/lightest size I could get away with given my current KO2 setup? This would be to basically get me home so I could get to my full size spare if need by. Thanks!

If you're not wheeling, I'd get something cheap, like a 32in, and a plug kit. The plug kit will take care of most anything on the street. The 32 would get you home in 2Hi, just like smaller diameter doughnut spares on cars.

There is a thread on here, about fitting 285/75/17 in stock location. Just a little modification.

The tire calculator will let you pick a skinny tire in the 'close enough' diameter.

Then call a couple used tire shops and see if they have one in that size. It can be 'no name', just with 50% or more tread, no dry rot, no patches.

Put it on a narrow steel wheel, new valve stem and you're all set.

I’m running 265’s so not speaking from experience, but from reading on the 255 pages they are fitting them in the stock location. If you wanted to put a skinny in there it would be pretty close to your 285 in diameter.

This is what I would do.

Or a plug kit and AAA which is how I'm operating with my current truck. The spare rusted off the bottom of the truck before I bought it. Been gambling three years with no spare but it's 90% just used for around town.

Did you have to bend out the tabs or mod anything to make it fit?

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was under the impression the 33 wouldn't fit under there. I got out there and just had to hammer those brackets in a little bit and its now wedged up in there. Looks like with any articulation, it could hit my RCI Diff skid, but should be fine for on road use.

This forum is definitely my go to for any Taco questions!
