Im still waiting for my new 2017 tacoma trd sport, but in the meantime i have my sight set on getting some falken wildpeak A/T3W tires in size p265 70 r17 instead of the original size tires of p265 65 r17.

Should i also grab a a larger size tire for the spare? maybe some cheap all season in the same size of the new tires?

If i do ever end up using the spare, i dont want to damage the gearing of the diffs... or will it not matter that much for a short time? I think its about an inch difference in the size of tires

Also, will the bigger size tire fit where the spare tire goes?

Any info would be appreciated, thanks

Yep up to 285's will fit under there. Just gotta bend the brackets a bit. As far as the spare its up to you. If you were to get a flat you would want to run the smaller spare up front as to not hurt the rear diff.

I think that size will fit fine. I know on my 2nd gen if you go up to 285/70/17 you have to modify it to fit. Anything past that no dice.

I still have my stock, which would work in a crunch but picking up a spare rim on friday and will match it with the same tire. Would not want to get stuck out on the trails and put the stock tire on or something smaller etc.

    Welcome to TW.

It's a great idea to have a matching sized spare. Even if it's just a cheapo tire.

The tires should be the same size for the differentials to work properly. However if you do end up with a smaller spare, just be sure the rear 2 tires are the same size or it'll damage the differential. Toss the spare up front and make sure 4WD ISNT on.

I know you know this, however to clarify--in 2WD. Otherwise you'll be giving the front differential a workout.

If on the rear I will say no more than 50 miles or so, with no "highway" speeds--some may argue this but I would do it if I had to...

    OP-

If your truck is 2wd you can run it up front safely without issue.

If your truck is 4x4 put it up front and put it in 2wd.

If need be you can use it front or rear in 4x4 so long as you have open front and rear diffs. Avoid it if possible, but technically you wouldn't damaged anything so long as your differentials are open because that allows both side to rotate at their own speed. Ideally this would be for a very short distance.

Yes your tire size will fit in the stock spare location just fine.

Get a full-size spare, and get 5 extra KO2's while you're at it.

Otherwise your rear diff will blow up in a blaze of glory, and "blaze of glory" is not covered under warrantee.

pretty sure even in 2wd you will fuck your front diff, unless you have spider gears to 100 percent free the front end or locking hubs

@DustStorm4x4 So i changed to bigger wheels and tires on my 2017 TRD Sport. I went with Method 18x9 wheels with 265/65R18 Falkens. Can I put a 265/70R17 on my spare wheel or does my spare wheel also need to be 18" as well?

I'm pretty sure just the overall tire diameter has to be the same. But I suppose the weight difference between the wheels might change things up a little. I'm not 100% sure. I wouldn't do it long term but for a spare I doubt it would mess anything up.

A slight difference in size shouldn't be much different than running a new spare with three worn out same size tires. This happens all the time.
