Smaller gas tank? Wow

TFL pointed out that the 4th gen Tacoma has a smaller gas tank than the 3rd gen (18 gallons vs 21 for 3rd gen). Does Toyota think buyers of midsize trucks don’t want the same range as buyers of full size pickups?
I wish I could get more than 350 miles on a tank of gas in my 3rd gen. My brother can get over 600 in his Ram 1500. I assumed Toyota would address this with the 4th gen but I was wrong. And I don’t want to pay thousands of dollars to replace the current tank with a larger one. Oh well; sorry to complain. First world problems

It is odd isn’t it? Especially since they seem to be targeting the overland bros. Of course in all reality those guys don’t really go off the beaten path too far. Pull off the road, take some poser shots for the gram then tuck tail and head back home. They seem more concerned with how much shit they can bolt onto a truck than actual traveling.

Could always get a F150, those come standard with a 36 gallon tank now. Get similar mileage to a Taco. Added bonus it still has a NA V8 engine option, probably buy it for less…

    Yeah
    I’m glad I bought a 2022
The new one appears to have some great features but I think Toyota made a mistake pricing it so much higher than the 3rd gen.

It is like they took two steps forward in some areas and three steps back in others.

Was thinking if I would happen to wreck my 3rd Gen ACLB, there isn’t a ‘24 4th Gen replacement for it.

I'm guessing they did it to drop weight...had to cut it somehow. Trucks are getting heavier.

My brother has a 2017 tundra trd pro with a 38 gallon tank. So that proves my point. Newer tundra gets a smaller gas tank as well.

Oh bummer. Wonder if it is because of the new linked suspension layout?

Our Trooper had a linked rear, but with a 20 gallon tank, it was at the rear between the frame rails, with a swing out spare.

All right man, let’s slow the roll on the whole, crashing your truck, and not being able to get a replacement, the universe doesn’t need any suggestions on making life harder for us with AC.

I’m gonna have to drive the Kia for a week!

This last weekend we were visiting our daughter outside of the DC area; on the return trip I refilled the Tacoma just northeast of Aberdeen, MD and made it all of the way home to New Hampshire on that tank; a distance of about 410 miles (the fill up when I got home was just over 19 gallons). Given the number of congested metro areas between those two points, yeah, I was genuinely surprised; I mean, driving say, I-80 across Iowa might well make for a 400+ mile tank, but in the Northeast Corridor?

Out of necessity, all of these design decisions are compromises.

    Lol!

Was getting bored, and was hammering on the truck earlier in the week, then thought oh shiiiiit, better slow my ass down and not put this thing on its roof, thinking ya know Toyota doesn’t have an exact replacement with the upcoming ‘24s. *sad spice*

You can then find a used 3rd gen ACLB and transfer your mods over.

As we have discussed, your only option for an access cab with doors is a Nissan Frontier.
I really wish that Ford had kept the ACLB as an option for the Ranger.
    Oh well.

When I watch YouTube videos for the 2024, and the presenter says "a Tacoma for everyone". I always leave a comment. Whoa there! Where is any access cab option?

Think they are going to get hard find as the years go on.
Yeah bummed Ford ditched the SC on the Ranger, that was on the list. At least the F150 still has it. Need to silence the Toyota fan boy voice in my head, and make the jump when the time comes.

LOL! Have looked and looked for a way to contact Sheldon Brown directly, and say to him “what the fuck man!” :D

There is always compromise with design changes. Have a 18 in the 1G, had to stop at the gas station twice a week for how much I drive. With the 3G it is every week and half.

^2018+ 3rd gens have the best corrosion protection of all Toyota truck generations, so chances are you'll find plenty of used ones through 2035.

I doubt it. Kinda skipped over the 2nd Gen because it was damn near impossible to find a V6 ACLB manny that wasn’t beat to shit.

Guessing by 2035 gas will be outlawed and be illegal for us to drive our own vehicles…

I posted this in the stickied thread: Toyota made a lot of compromises to cram in the fully boxed frame and 4-link rear axle. 4th gen frame rails narrow significantly toward the rear. The beefier crossmembers also hang lower to provide attachment for the axle links and coil bucket. Despite the 4" longer wheelbase, the fuel tank still hangs 4" lower to snag on obstacles off-road.

The Trooper's rear fuel tank would not meet today's crash safety standards in North America. If the Trooper was actually popular, it would've suffered retroactive recalls like Jeep did.
