Small turbo on my 2.7l ?....

    Got a 96 Tacoma 4x4 with the 2.7l auto.Just curious if anyone on here has installed one on this motor.Jve looked into the kits they are ridiculous on prices......

    I'm not familiar with a turbo on these trucks alone, but do with many others.

    What is "ridiculous" in terms of price?

    I ask because, unless there's a reliable, bolt-on kit available for the 2.7, you will have to get a few things custom made.

    This is mainly on the exhaust side, as you'll need a custom turbo manifold to attach on the exhaust side, and plumbing up to the intake.

    Let's not forget that our PCM's are unable to be reprogrammed or "tuned"; you will have to rely on a piggyback system for additional fuel, or go standalone and upgrade your to larger fuel injectors and a better fuel pump.

    Depending on your usage, I may even venture to suggest getting an intercooler installed to keep the temps low which will also require custom fitting.

    KO Racing actually makes a great kit that solves all of the installation headaches including exhaust. But tuning is another thing entirely. As usual the stock ECU is trash so you'll have to get creative on your own for that

    If you're thinking of going with a turbo and you aren't going to build a kit yourself then this is the only kit that is complete and appropriately sized for the 2.7 Tacoma.

    The engines boost very well but the stock computer isn't going to work, so when you're doing your calculus plan on having a standalone computer installed and tuned as well.

    I'll drop you one last hint, you won't get this done without doing all (every last bit) of the work yourself for less than 5 grand. If that's too steep of a price, then leave the truck stock.

    Was thinking about doing a koracing turbo kit for a while and they seem like a very reputable source in that matter. Then again, when you boost a Tacoma you don’t look for super high numbers usually so in my opinion if I’m ever gonna look to boosting it I may do an eBay turbo (lol) and just run it at like 7-8lbs with a tiny inter cooler and do all the other stuff. Or even go to the junk yard and find an old power stroke turbo and throw that in the engine bay.

    I'm a fan of home brew turbo kits having taken part in making a few. Might I suggest instead of big turbo low boost because you'll never get the PS or Holset turbos to spool reasonably on the 2.7, build a manifold for two of the little turbos that come on the Audi and VW 1.8s. I think that's a KO3 turbo and two of them would spool quick on the 2.7 and you could easily net 8psi or more.

    So a twin turbo setup with the 1.8T turbos both pushing around 4-5? I’ve been thinking about this for a while and honestly I just wanna do something not more then 2k that adds a bit of power to my engine

    Yeah, I buy those turbos from the junkyard all the time for $25 and there's always plenty because VWs and Audis are crap haha. Would be pretty decent though, those turbos are a bit undersize for a 1.8 and that's why they only make 5psi or so on those cars but two of them on a 2.7 would be very responsive and have a good upper end considering the 2.7 only revs to 5500rpm. Just have to make sure you take advantage of the firing order to gang up the two correct cylinders for each turbo so there isn't dead time between exhaust pulses on each turbo.

    Top end and bottom end building or no? Maybe just new headers first then be prepared for a turbo kit?

    Nah, at 8 to 15psi I wouldn't worry about anything besides your tuning and cooling system.

    Properly spec'd you can run the Koracing kit up to 5 Psi and the stock ecu will compensate. The key thing is you need the BOV rerouted to the intake to keep the MAF happy. At 5 psi with the kit on my 4runner (4000lbs, 35" tires, 4.88 gears) the 0-60 was basically 10 seconds flat. Not bad at all IMO. Hardest part of the install is swapping out the oil pan.
